Off to pistol range

Recommended Posts

This morning I'm off to local (30 min drive) pistol range. It just ain't like it used to be now with fancy range, lanes and variety of target shapes. With I was growing up and much of my life, I spent in rural areas. I could walk a hundred yards or so and star hunting or just plinking. Now, living a little deeper in town I go to a "fancied up" range. In stead of setting up an acorn or a pine cone, I "buy" targets with drawings of anything I'd like to imagine shooting. In stead of leaning my rifle against a tree and taking pistol from my crumpled holster, I take a cart with boxes of guns, ammo and ear protection.

Oh my,,,just another way that life has changed,,,at least in most of the east. If you still go out your door or just down the road to do some plinking,,,,, enjoy (and of course train & build memories for any youngsters).

Have a great day.

Regis

I think your talking about what has kept me from bow and arrows.

Always wanted to do it but only if I can just take stroll out of my backyard and just shot a few arrows for recreational purpose (aswell as serious practice training with a club) but people are gonna notice that and soon officers arrive and stop that.

Booring but also understandable.

I now have a place on the country side so maybe I'll pick it up one day. Have relatives that are somewhat experts on the archery subject.

Hope your day was nice anyway!

Tom

When we moved here to Utah our street was 3 houses long that deadended into a corn field, pheasants were a driving hazard and every town had a sign posted about not shooting within 100 yards of a house, now the signs are gone, we are surrounded by houses, people are the hazard driving and you can't even light off a firecracker on the 4th of july without some yahoo calling the police. All this in 11 years and to boot there is a wally world supercenter a mile from the house.

From 1960 to 1967 we lived in a remote part of NE Washington state. For 4 years we had no electricity, running water, and an outhouse (2 holer). I used to go hunting/plinking almost every day of the year. The only thing that kept me in was when temps dropped below -20F or the snow got deaper than 24 inches. I took a 13 passenger school buss to school. I used to take my rifle or shotgun on the buss to school. When I got to school, I would take my gun to the office and they would store it for me until school was out. After school I would get my gun and hunt the 4 miles to where we lived.

During the summer I would hike to town (4 miles) and meet my cousin and we'd go prairie dog hunting. I would walk anywhere around town (350 people and 100 dogs) with a 22 revolver strapped to my hip and packing a 22, 30-30, or shotgun. No one ever gave us a second look except tourist, freaked them out!!!

Can you imagine the PANIC that would cause today. I never would have and it didn't occur to any of us to shoot anyone. If you had a beef with someone you used your knuckles to settle it. In 30 years they only had one shooting in the whole county. God how time have changed!!!!!!!!!

Like most of you I now have to go to an indoor range to shoot (pistols only). I can't afford a membership in the gun clubs in the Seattle area, so don't get to shoot rifles anymore. The State and Forest Service have shut down most wilderness areas to shooting, nearest area to shoot would be at least a 2.5 hr drive for me.

I'm lucky as I only live app 100 yards from our Pistol club and about 200 yards from the Claybird club. We have restrictions like not shooting before 7 am and after 8 pm. We are all shooters in this family so it suits us well. It is a National grade range so we cater for almost all disciplines and it's only 25 miles from the Capital. Shooting will always be in the sights of the Anti Gunners though.

Regis, I live in NYC- If you think gun restrictions are tough by you? :helpsmilie: I gave up my pistols here because the permit FEE went up to a couple of hundred dollars a year just for a target permit. (Can you say financial intimidation?) I refused to be part of that and gave up my pistols. (until 20 minutes after I retire and FLEE this city!) Well, years ago a friend of mine introduced me to 10 meter airgun shooting. They have been doing it in europe for years. If you think you are a good shot, give it a try. It will surely humble you. 33 feet away the bull is the same size as the pellet! Hardest shooting I have ever tried. Lots of fun, quiet and safe. Plus no "cleaning". :) Airguns rule!

Air Pistol shooting is very demanding! My wife and children shoot air and love it, not like me, I find it too hard even though you're only a lousy 10 metres from the card. I prefer the other disciplines which are much easier to consistently shoot 10s. I put my wifes Feinwerkbau in a large vice and at 10 metres it is just one furry hole. They are extremely accurate!

The kids use Walthers while I have an old Steyr. I can't shoot the scores the rest of the family shoot, too damn hard for me. Pellets are getting dear. They are app $13.00 a tin now but we buy in quantity so that brings the price down a little. The worst thing is the five foot high bottle of c02 that we need to feed them.
