How do you make a LARGE belt?

Recommended Posts

I take straps from a side to build a belt. I add 9" to the actual measurement for the buckle end and hole end when the belt is all said and done.

I know some folks will need a belt that may exceed the strap length (I say "may" because I don't have a full side on hand to directly measure).

How does one go about extending/splicing a belt without looking like patchwork?

I have seen it done a couple of ways... one way is to use rings or rectangle dees to attach two or more straps together, the other was to sew three straps together giving two of them a nice decorative end that when sewn down became part of design.

Thanks for the ideas :You_Rock_Emoticon:

That confirmed my thinking about having a decorative joint. That would look pretty nice when it was finished.

Depends on the length you need to add. The using of the rectangle loops has worked great most of the time for me. This way works well because the tip covers the loop when the belt is worn, if the addition isn't too long.

Otherwise, just tell the customer the leather shrunk, with a smile on your face, and see the response you get. I always seem to get a good one. Then they usually order a new belt and take the old one home for when the New Year's resolutions start next time.

I have saddle straps (as they call them at a tack shop I used to frequent) i.e. Latigos, work great, they're 66" long (at least the ones I boguht were) which leaves you wit habout a 51" usable belt, bigger than that and I guess you tell them you need to make them suspenders

Shorts,

Belive it or not I have made a belt 90" long. He was a big boy!

I had to cut it out of a side and just made it. It can be done without splicing.
