Adler 30-1......HELP?

Recommended Posts

:helpsmilie: I am trying to learn to use my antique adler 30-1, I have some paperwork as to how to thread the thing, but after

that I am totally in the dark and frustrated.

Does anyone use one of these antique 300lb monsters anymore and if so, what type of thread do you recommend,

are needles available anywhere, and any tips or tricks to get it adjusted would be of great assistance.

Thanks!

P.S. Looks exactly like the Singer 29-4, so possibly might be similar instructions.

I don't know much about the adler, but I did find these links that are helpful.

The manual is only $5 at Campbell Bosworth:

Thanks, I think there is a manual on this site down farther on the page, I found it yesterday but just haven't downloaded it yet. I finally had to walk away from the old girl yesterday and if I could have picked her up I probably would have thrown her out the window, but I just took a break from it and did something else.

Hi Susan,

The 30-1 is a good old machine used by the shoe repair industry. It has a top feed and is ok for veg tan up to about 5/16 thickness and maybe a little more of chrome tan. You really need to get a manual for it. Thread should be 69 or 92 or 138 poly, nylon, or Tenara (Cordura). The Needles for the 30-1 are of the 332 System and you will use size 22 or 23 (140 or 160). Schmetz makes them in the LG and LL points and get the LL if you can. You could also use a System 29 X 3 in a pinch and they're almost always size 23 (160). Expect to pay about $1.50 per needle from a shoe supplier (they almost always have them), I think Zack White carries them too.

Threading one is a show me kind of thing and your best bet is to find a shoe repair shop with one and ask him to show you. Maintenance is Industrial sewing machine 101 and timing is 102 and any "old" machine repair guy can do it. Parts aren't that hard either as there are still plenty of them (and their Singer brothers) around.

Susan, I live in Winchester and work in Middleburg, if either one is convenient for you I can show you how to thread your machine. You can email me at leatherchopper@aol.com or call me at Journeymen Saddlers (540)687-5888 and we can set something up. Kevin

I think I have it threaded correctly, the biggest 2 problems I am having now is stitch length (it would be a great leather cutter) the stitches are so short and I can't figure out how to lengthen.

I am also having a problem with the bobbin thread looping about an inch too long on each stitch. You think everything looks great until you turn the piece over and then you see huge loops of thread all the way down. Sometimes it sews correctly and loops and correctly again all in the same piece, it keeps changing back and forth without anything being changed on the machine.

Thanks!

Susan

Hi Susan,

On the 29, there is a thumb screw and bracket on the feed bar (the thingi that goes to the presser foot), loosen the thumb screw and move the bracket down to lengthen the stitch and up to shorten it. The looping may be caused by insufficient top tension, tighten the disc mechanism the thread goes through.

Here is a manual for the 29-4

Yesterday I thought I had the beast figured out, I adjusted the stitch length and finally got the tension corrected and I was sewing along with some scraps and I was impressed. I got up this morning and thought I could just start from where I left off yesterday and low and behold I am back to square one, and not one thing has been changed unless the machine has a ghost or something. I wish if that were the case he/she would adjust it back when they are done using it!!! Ugggghhhh.
