Can you use patterns received legally in your leather works either sold or given as gifts? How long do you have to weight?

Do you mean using a pattern to make an item and then selling that item? If so the answer is yest. people buy patterns and make items from that pattern to sell all the time. The problem you run into with patterns is when you make an exact copy of that pattern and try to sell that pattern or give it away. Most copywrights say cannot be sold or ditributed, if you are giving it away you are distributing it.

Are you selling an item made from a pattern or the pattern itself?

Here's the real question. Is the design sold as a tooling / craft pattern, a random design off the web, or copyrighted by someone? Sold as a pattern, go for it. Random design, find out who owns the design and ask. Copyrighted? Don't bother. Not worth the trouble.

If your talking about patterns you "bought" along with a how to video, pattern pack, or kit you can certainly use them on work that you sell or give away. However you can't resell or post the patterns for someone else to use. Well I just noticed camano ridge already said this.

When in doubt, ask the creator of the pattern!

Otherwise, echo what everyone else has said.
