For Sale - Campbell Lockstitch Machine

Recommended Posts

For Sale - I have a Campbell Bosworth Lockstitch machine purchased from Campbell Bosworth about 7 years ago. I comes complete with the stand, bobbin winder, assorted tools and extra pulleys, just as it shipped from CB when I purchased it new. I have sewn very little on it. I have used 1 spool of thread since I bought it. Works perfectly and is oiled every time it was used, again very seldom. I will post pictures later, but has been kept in conditioned shop since my purchase and wanted to get it out here if folks are interested. Since the questions will be asked, I am selling because I don't have the time to do this anymore, own a small machine and can use that for what little I do. I live in Georgia and would probably require that you pick it up. Shipping would be a serious chore and I cannot deliver. I would rather deal face to face. I paid $6197.00 new. I am asking $5200. Make me an offer.

When I seen the first price I thought it was too much but now this explains why you priced it like that. I think your machine is worth every penny I love these Campbell's Im also glad you asked for advise let me tell you what I think. Your machine is worth more than any others here selling right now because of the fact that it came rebuilt from Campbell in Texas not too long ago. I can tell it was because you mentioned it and it is properly painted by them with that blue color they use. As far as price there are a lot of variables that affect the price. I have seen machines sell for 800 and as much as 4k for a used Campbell but its pretty rare when someone pays 4k for a machine that is used. People will rather buy a 441 clone with al l the bells an d whistles for 2695 and that's delivered to you. You might be able to sell your machine for 3500 but your still up against the clone. The 441 is a much more versatile machine that can sew various textiles while the Campbell is limited to leather. If I were you I'd price the machine at 3500 and I bet it will sell I don't know if you want to go this low but I think you'd have a good chance of selling it, remember the buyer has to still pay for shipping. That can cost anywhere from 300-500 dollars that puts your machine at 4k again. Think about all the info I have given you re price your machine and I hope it sells. This week I had access to 8 Campbell, Randall's, Landis 3 all ranging from 800-3000 the ones selling for 3k were rebuilt as well and sold by gentlemen that have been doing this for years. The Randall's were mostly at around 800-1200 and the Landis 3 from 2-3k so your competing with lots of other people too so price it competitively or you might just want too keep it. Best of luck!

Ralph

Funny how on another post there was interest on a "old" un recon machine at over 3k and some think that this one is a "bit" much where its basically brand new! no comparison to any clone or non recon machine price seems fair in my opinion!please everyone this is just my 2 red cents!

I agree with you 100% that the machine is worth what he's asking for but he's going to have a very hard time selling the machine because most people would rather buy a brand new clone for much less. These are the nicest machines and in no way did I mean to question the machines quality or anything similar to that. If these machines have been around for 100 years its because they can produce a beautiful stitch that no needle feed machine can copy plus it will last you a lifetime. The fact is that he's trying to sell the machine. If you were referring to the Cyclone the seller and I did not strike a deal he is set on his price and I respect that, the seller here asked for the publics opinion and I gave mine. Would you pay 4200 for this machine? It has also been on here for only a couple days it takes time to sell a machine this nice. Most people want to spend a lot less and fix it and clean it up themselves. These machines sell new for 5800 a head plus 200 for a work gauge, 600 for a stand, taxes, shipping at the end you end up paying close to 7k for the machine. I would rather keep my machine that let someone have it for 3500 these days people don't appreciate the value of these needle and awl machines value I do, I like these machines a lot but I just bought a couple of them. If yours would of been available when I first needed a machine I would have bought it no questions asked for 4200-4800 let it sit for a while it seems like you thought it would sell fast but things take time. I apologize if anything I said came out wrong, offending or depreciating your machines value I certainly did not mean to do that. Best of luck list it on Craigslist but it will take time. God Bless!

I agree with Ralph, frankly I think these machines are worth really really good money, however with cheap clones about at $2700 with good parts availability, that what most people are going for now.

Of course you are right, but it is a matter of rather you want the very best at a reasonable price, or rather you want a real good machine that is less money. I cannot afford the machine or I would have one like it. If nothing else for the COOL factor. I use a Cobra class 4, have had two of them, and am completely satisfied with it and the job it does. Shorter learning curve and a bit easier to work on if it does develop a problem. Still the higher end hook and awl machines are considered by the masters of saddlemakers I know to be the very best stitcher there is. Ken

Hi Steve....could I be so bold in asking what you would estimate to ship this machine to Australia [well um ..New Zealand]??

I have a lead here, just in today, in part container space shipping into NZ [one on one deal- not through a broker -so may cut some cost].

But I'm really uncertain about crating and long haul road freight. We sort of guestimated ~NZD$2000-2500 ? depending on how close it was to the main export wharves.

cheers

I second all the endorsement of needle and awl machines and the reality of the market and the 441 clones. I have had a UL, bought new, for 40 years now and did have a long learing curve but with that behind me I'm tickled as a hog in slop. NOTE I had another 'curve' a few years ago with thread. When new I had soon abandoned waxed linen thread for the convenience and even tighter stitch possibilities with synthetic thread and was pleased for 20+ years then mayhem and much difficulty. I started a light lubrication of upper with silicone thread lubricant and problem solved. Now I dont have a pile of spools with a few yards used to put on bobbins. Top and bottom useage is about equal and "birds nests" are just vague memories. But if I were just starting I'm sure that $2695 complete would sound better than much more just to get started.

The first priority is to find a machine that is cheap overseas, ie cheap enough to be worth shipping, second ... the owner must be prepared to crate it in special timber that customs will accept and he must sign the declaration, after that your shipper needs to collect it and ship it to you. I find that I need to add $1600 Austalian to anything I buy in the States, thats 800 to collect and ship and another 800 to clear customs, wharf charges and me driving to get it from the port. Everything is crazy dear here, a towbar for my VW Crafter here is $600 on ebay.... in England you can get one for $180.... that's dollars not pounds.. So everything works pretty much like that.

Just to add to that Gordon, its the home port charges that can catch you unawares, if something is small and can be posted there is no problem. Ideally you need to accumulate a number of items and ship them at once, thereby reducing the costs per item. Sadly last time I did this in the States with a guy called Bill Neel, 501 Maple, Chetopa, Kansas, 67336 he disappeared with my shipment of machines, wont answer emails or the phone.

Again in no way are we trying to discredit this machines value, quality, or durability. It is well known that this is the best needle and awl machine ever made and still being produced. As said its is going to be hard because they do not hold re-sale value I don't know why if its the best machine out there. Think about it this way if you listed your machine at 4k it would take a while to sell but it will eventually sell if you list it for 3.5k I think you'll get it sold quick, this would be more like a distress sell, right now we have another Campbell for a little more than 3.5k and it is still sitting idle a lot of inquiries but no sale. This is the machine you'd be competing against and if I was to buy one I'd buy yours being that it is rebuilt by Campbell already not too long ago. In the other hand there has been numerous of sales on here for used 441 clones and they are selling for around 2k and 2.2k some not even being the premium package with all the attachments and tables and the seller only paid 2695 for them they are only loosing a couple hundred dollars while you have a potential to loose thousands. For some reason I don't find it fair when this machine is the cream of the crop. I thought about this all night because I read my post and maybe it sounded like I was being cheap, I'm sorry if there is anyone that appreciates these machines it's me. You should not have to take that big of a hit the last price you listed is fair for both you and the buyer. Once you have a buyer you guys can negotiate a little further. Best of luck and I hope your machine sells if you want I can spread the word around for 4200 if its ok with you let me know? The thing is clones are hot right now it's they are hot in the market, and since the demand is high resale price is good as well. Think of it this way not everyone has a Rolls Royce but everyone has a Chevy Impala you my friend have the real deal. God Bless!

Ralph

PS re-post your machine with good pictures, close ups of everything included and list it for 4200 be patient it'll take a little while but this is as close you can get to a new one this ones practically new.

Steve,

You guys go trough a lot to have these machines shipped to you. Then you have people stealing from you not good. I know nothing about shipping overseas but how does it work and why can't a machine come back to the USA or is it just too much to ship. Would a smaller item like a Junker & Ruh be able to ship from Australia to the USA and what do you think it will cost if it can be done?

In my previous post I suggested for you to repost the machine for 4200 I was. Wrong when I seen your last post I seen 4800 I think that's a good price to start just keep that price and list it on other places as well like Leatherpros and Proleptic.

Well, I appreciate all of your feedback. I am not crazy about selling my stitcher but had decided to look into the market to see what it was worth and would still entertain offers. I appreciate the feedback and if anyone is interested, I would like to know...Thanks,Mike
