meyers stitching awl with different blades

I'm assuming I can use my meyers stitching awl with different blades to punch holes in leather for hand stitching small goods like collars and such. Awl blades seem to come in different lengths and round and diamond point. I'm guessing diamond point but what determines how long an awl blade you buy?
