"ulu" Knife Versus Head/round Knife

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am wondering if anyone has experience using a ulu knife or similar in place of the head knife.

To be fair I am new to fabrication, having only tooled/carved projects in years past.

I was looking at purchasing this to compliment the old Midas round knife I still need to sharpen the nicks out of and hone.

Thanks,

Whatever works I say. I looked at the ad and I do not know if I would say this is a traditional ulu knife. How you are going to cut your leather with this survival knife?? I know a person that uses an ulu in leathercraft. Since this is my hobby, cost is a major factor.

Here is a link to what I think of an ulu: http://www.knives.net/ULUPAGE.htm

Thanks King's X

Your link is also what I think of as an ulu knife.

I am just looking for alternatives.

I did see some ulu knifes similar to the first link, but with damascus steel.

The big thing I noticed with most is that they are manufactured in China.

Like everthing else these days:(

Thanks,

Doyle

Grohman Knives of Pictou N.S. make an Ulu knife with just 1 post/ shaft between handle and blade. There cost is around $50 and their steel is very good, around Rc 57. I have 8-10 of their kitchen and hunting knives and they take and hold a very good edge. They were the makers of D.H. Russel boot knives of fame amongst hunters and trappers. Gump.

That first knife you posted, I think you will find it very dificult to do the type of cutting you need to do on leather. As to a traditional ulu I have two of them and have tried one for cutting leather. It will cut it, however I found it cumbersome for some of the cutting. It was hard to hold for cutting curves. I prefer the handle od a rgulat round or head knife.
