Finishing The Flesh Side

Recommended Posts

What do you use? I've been gum tragging it for my holsters, but it seems like anything metal will wear into that over time. Suggestions? What do you folks find useful?

I make a lot of dog collars and ladies bracelets. I genrally use Mink Oil paste, but have used GT.

I recently used gum trag, followed by resolene for a rough-out holster.

I slick down the flesh side with gum trag, water, and elbow grease. Then I seal it with Resolene or the homemade version of it.

I have some GT but haven't used it yet. how do you use it to finish the flesh side. Up to now I have been saddle soaping it. Is it the same method? rub it on and in until smooth? Should I have the piece finished on the front first?

I use a dauber or a foam brush to apply it liberally, and then use a plastic slicker to rub it in. I would imagine any hard. smooth, flat item would work. Hmmm.. We also make vinyl signs... I wonder how one of our sign squeegees would work. They are pretty rigid and may do the job. And they are cheap... Under a buck and last forever - unless you nick them.

I'll try it as soon as I get a chance.

I have used canvas cloth to burnish edges on some things and I wonder if rubbing the GT in with the cloth would burnish the flesh side. I will have to practice on some scrap.

I use a quarter inch oak dowel rod, cut to about 6 or 7 inches, in my drill. I put the GT on in a section, then slick it with the rod in the drill. Works really well.
