Journal | A Fresh Start From A New Guy

Recommended Posts

Hello,

First off let me say what an amazing place you have here! I am an avid hand-crafter. I've worked with a lot of materials, from Stone to Wood. Leather is a new branch for me. Ever since I was a young teen I was very interested in working with my hands.. I'm somewhat of a geeky guy I guess, which is kind of what led me down this path. I enjoy making things, I find it far more gratifying for me to have something of worth that I built or put together.

Now then, I do a lot of Math in my spare time. I have a good 40-50 notebooks laying around filled with equations and random doings... I want to combine all my equations into one, nice looking journal and of course me being me, I wanted that artistic look.

The picture I attached is something I am EXTREMELY interested in. The issue is, I really have no idea where to start what so ever. What materials would I need to do something like this? Does anyone have ANY good references on some good books I could grab and start learning. Obviously Im not going to jump right into something like this, I will most likely be taking scraps and playing around with that before I feel confident enough to do this.

Any links/suggestions greatly appreciated!

And again, thank you very much for allowing me to join your wonderful community. :)

That really is an ambitious piece to set as your target and I admire you for doing so.

My personal suggestion is that you go and buy a big bag of leather from your nearest Tandy store and spend the next three months pounding it every which way you can. Read everything you can find here on the forum and learn how to mold it, fold it, shape it and finish it. When you have done all that start looking for the fittings you will need and work out how to fit them to the work. Learn about rivets and stitching and how the two work together to make a strong finished job.

If you do all that then you stand a very good chance of making this journal. I wish you luck!

Feel free to pm me if you need any help. Good luck!

Best wishes,

Ray
