colt45saa Report post Posted August 8, 2007 Hello All, New guy here,I started cowboy action shooting a year ago and would like to make my own stuff,like spur straps,gun belts,holsters,chaps and ammo blocks.So what is the best way to get started?I've looked for a classes around here with no luck,the hoosier leather guild is not ready doing much any more so i've been told.So i was just going to get a starter kit and go at it.Any good videos or books out there???thanks for any info you have. I've bought them from HideCrafters, Tandy, and Springfield (links are in supplier section of this site). There are some classes listed on the calander here and many in Fort Worth in October. Beaverslayer Report post Posted August 8, 2007 Welcome to the forum Colt, As Regis has stated, there are lots of books and videos at Tandy and Hidecrafters. If you don't have one near you, they both have websites that you can order from. Tandy also sells starter kits, and most Tandy managers are well versed in leatherwork, and will more than likely help you out. As for here on the forum, everyone is willing to help you out as well, if you have questions...just ask...someone will give you the answer you're looking for. The Central Indiana Leathercrafters Guild is alive and well- are you anywhere near Indianapolis? I'm near Ft. Wayne, but in Ohio. If you want to PM (private message) me where you are, maybe I can introduce you to some folks? You received some good advice above. Browsing this site is a good start, and are some good books available at Tandy. Pick a project you want to start with, a pick one of the simpler ones. Assemble the tools you need and give it a try. With each successful completed project, your skills and confidence will improve. You can always ask a question here and someone will likely know, and someone else will have something in their scrap bin to prove it. None of us got any good without a few mistakes! Romey Report post Posted August 9, 2007 (edited) My friend Chuck Burrows of Wild Rose Trading has a couple vidoes out. He specializes in sheaths and holsters, the videos take you from newbie beginner to very high end work in a short time. Most of all the way the video was shot and his teaching style is bar none, He also is likely the top 2 or 3 most knowledgable leather workers I know of. Here is the link on his site to the vids.Sheath and Holster DVD No i dont make a dime from sending you there , I just personally have the DVDS and compared to others instructional videos I have seen this is as good as it gets.
