Collar For My Kitty

Recommended Posts

This is my first attempt at a collar. It's black with matte finish. Royal purple hand stitching and painted metallic purple letters. Four purple stones on each side. The hardest part was dealing with the glue from between the leathers while edging.

Really nice, the purple thread is very striking. Is the d-ring not fixed or sewn in place?

Thanks Mijo. Your right, I let the dee ring float between the buckle and the taper in the leather. The dee ring is not wide enough to go over the wider part of the collar. I got this dee ring at Tandy and it is really thick for its size. I would have preferred to capture it in the collar. I have other collars to make and I think I may file off half the thickness on the flat side, allowing it to sit flatter in between the leathers. That or I need to find a finer guage dee ring. I'm not to worried as its just there to hold her tags. This is my first collar and I would like to make others. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

Spincycle, if the collar is for your pets you may want to consider stamping the phone number directly one the collar itself and forgoing the tag altogether (which would eliminate the need for the d-ring completely). I've done this for my own pet's collars / harnesses but I still had to include a d-ring so that the collar and or harness could be attached to a leash.

You can also sandwhich the d-ring between the top and bottom layers of the collar and simply have a gap in the collar where stitching ends and starts again, the gap w/o stitching is where the d-ring is located. If your not walking your cat on a leash, I don't image that there's any issue with not having the d-ring fixed.

Mijo, thanks for the tips. I like the phone number idea. Here in Alberta we are required to have our cats licensed. So the tag must be on her collar. Now the "base model" has been proven. I have already modified my collar template to accommodate the dee ring in the same fashion you described. I have another collar for my other cat that I started at the same time as this one. So any collars after that will have the integrated dee ring.

I just noticed that I forgot to dye the strap holes on this collar. Back to the bench.....
