A client is wanting an ox blood red wallet. I've always just used eco flo water based stains to finish my products. I tried the dye on a scrap piece of leather and it doesn't seem like it would hold in the stamped areas and buff off the higher areas. Do I stain it first with a dark brown to get into my grooves and then dye it all red?

I do fiedbing medium brown or dark brown then use cherry stain to give it a deep reddish brown color
