Cantle Binding

Recommended Posts

I built my first saddle and after I finished the cantle binding it looked kind of rough. The front side doesn't look too bad but on the back side I can't get the stitches to exit where I want them. Is there any trick to this or is it just practice? Thanks folks.

This is ideally what I'm looking for: michael_bethel_20090114_1032240607.jpg

Something that was suggested to me was to run a stitch marker on the back side, as well as the front.........and, I "start" each hole with my awl on the back side about 1/3 depth, before I make the hole coming from the front side. That helps me quite a bit. Although I can't say mine are as perfect as the photo you posted, they usually come out pretty nice. You could always put a "hidden stitch" binding on...........I have done those quite a bit. JW

JW is spot on, it takes a little longer, but; the results are worth it. I do it the same way, and of course, practice, practice, practice.

Thanks so much guys. I'll try that next time. By the way I love both of your websites. You're great saddlemakers. Thanks for the help.
