why is there wet spots when i mold my wet leather?!

Recommended Posts

I am working with double live oak thats about 7 - 8 oz. Im doing a simple envelope type of mold. I only wet it good enough for the bubbles to escape but when i seem to let it dry there are small 1/4 inch wet spot looking type of things around the case maybe about 20 of them. Am i doing something worng?

I've had this happen when (unknown to me) there was something on my fingers when I worked on the leather. I used rubbing alchohol and it stained okay after.

U want to make certain that your leather is clean before wetting. I wipe mine down with alcohol and a clean rag. Also certain types of well water will leave marks. Sulfur water is bad for staining leather. And of course you want to make certain that the water you are using has no oils in it. I don't but I have a friend that only wets his leather with bottled water and he gets some beautiful finishes on his leather projects.

Some pictures of this would help. I know that from time to time wetting leather seems to expose certain imperfections that were there but not scene before. Could be exposing bug bites or some scarring that wasnt aparent initially.

I think that's the reason they invented paint, to cover up those sins.
