Leatheroo's superb Steampunk mask and that amazing hat a few weeks back inspired me to hunt the internet for other examples of Steampunk art and I couldn't resist showing you all this:

There is another crazy mask at this site - but you have to scroll for it...

For a Steampunk laptop that starts with a key check this out:

Okay, it isn't everyone's thing, but I really do enjoy clever, inventive use of materials. Steampunk is essentially a DIY culture. In other words people actually make this amazing stuff and don't simply go out and buy it in a store and that gives it the same sort of value we place on our own work. Like it or not, Steampunk is an exciting art form and one that is getting more and more recognition.

It is of particular interest to the forum because, in addition to brass and woodwork, Steampunk enthusiasts do produce some superb leatherwork. Has anyone else found anything exciting?

Since we're discussing steampunk and the underlying sub-culture, I thought I would share a short feature I stumbled onto at YouTube that shows a lot of steampunk influence. I should warn you that, although it's very well-produced, it's very dark, sad, and depressing. I really don't care to watch it again, but I was fascinated by the artistic style and all the wonderous steam-powered machines.

Different!

Is that 'different = good' or 'different = bad' Tony? - And why?

Thanks for the pointer Roo - I'd missed that one. Bob Basset make/s some wonderful stuff.

Loved the movie Kate, but, as you said, very dark... definitely not something to watch if you are feeling low...

Has anyone heard any Steampunk music? I kinda like some of it but the jury is still out...

Good diff. Ray. Better than the run of the mill plastic USB's!

I just returned from the largest steampunk convention on the west coast at Sunnyvale, California called Steampowered Con, Oct 31-Nov 2. Pictured is my airship pilot's helmet, complete with leather goggles. Goggles and airships are a recurring theme amongst steampunkers. The helmet plate reads "Gryphon Airship". Steampunk get-togethers offer an opportunity for much creative fun. Everyone was in costume, and it was quite a sight to behold. 1102dragoon4.jpg

All this steampunk stuff makes me think I have next year's halloween costume decided...now I just need to come up with the design.

This year will be interesting, I have to make myself a fur-clad barbarian costume, and now a steampunk costume. This is gonna take a long time.

By the way thanks for the links everyone, i'll be checking them out as I design.

I've never heard of steampunk before this thread. I find it interesting but sorta creepy.

I'm not sure that Steampunk is particularly creepy, Hilly - just a bit challenging I guess. Most people simply don't feel comfortable dressing up in outlandish gear even if they like making it.

I know several Steampunk enthusiasts (Steampunkers?) and they are all such fun. One or two may take themselves a bit too seriously but then that is the same wherever you go. Essentially, I just love the stuff they make and wear for amusement - I have the distinct impression that Steampunks may be laughing quietly at the rest of humanity...
