My First Tooling Pattern

Recommended Posts

This is my first attempt at a tooling pattern. I couldn't find any free ones that suited me, so I drew my own. This will be for a cuff bracelet. If anyone see something they think could be improved upon, PLEASE let me know. I am here to learn :grouphug5vj5:

Very Very Nice, GOOD JOB, the only thing i can think is that is a lot of background, maybe widen up the vines a bit and add some more offshoots, but i think it flows really well. Again great job the first one is always the hardest.

Peace and Love

Thank you! I was having a hard time coming up with things to fill in the background LOL! I will have to go back in and tweak it some more once my neck quits aching.

I think Bryan pegged it pretty well. I'm afraid when you tooled it, your vines, etc will look spindly with all the background area you have drawn in. Otherwise, great start.

Thats really pretty!

The only thing that leapt out at me was the vine/branch in the upper left corner, its a little straight, could you maybe curve it a little bit? all the rest flow really nicely.. Or maybe you could fit a second leaf there..

Your pattern coud be done using the "inverted style" of leather carving with little modification. For referance - look to Al Stohlman's book on the style or you can perhaps find some time to visit Peter Main's site. http://www.petermain.com/ The opening page displays some inverted carving on a portfolio by him and there are more examples of his superb work in the site. Well worth a visit.

Natalie - excellent observation and thank you for pointing it out! What if I modify the leaf to look more like the bottom right corner? Would that flow better?

Wyoming Slick - awesome info! I never heard of inverted tooling and I can see where this would be a neat design to try it with. I'm going to leave this pattern alone for future use with inverted carving and make a copy of it, in which I will fatten the vines and add more. That way I can have a regular version, plus an inverted version of the pattern. Thanks!

That might work, but I like the existing leaf overlapping the edge

you could also maybe alter the 'curl' a little more that comes off the vine. Its early here and I am supposed to be getting ready for work, so this is a quickie paint line to show what I mean. Edited by Ladykahu

A good freehand drawing. Something I stop trying.

I Googled pencil images flowering vines and seen

some that i could use next time i do a Ladies flask,

headband or can holder. Download it-import it to print shop

size it ( may add another image with it) print it out.

When I start to trace ,if there is 2 images, flow them together.

My Print shop has rulers on side and top, so i can size it to fit whatever

size of leather i am using.

This works for me. I can see you adding to the image with your ability.

Stewart

Thanks for the puting a project into action _Flask

I think it's cool that you want to make your own tooling patterns! I can make decent construction patterns and can carve and stamp well enough but the people that can draw a tooling pattern to fit their project are the real artists in my mind. Keep trying, Keep learning and Keep up the good work!
