Jeremy Stead Saddles?

Recommended Posts

Curious if anyone knows about Jeremy Stead saddles. http://ranchsaddle.com/index.php?cPath=7

I am curious as to how one can build a wade on a wood and rawhide tree and sell new in the $1500 price range.

The stirrup leathers in the photos all seem too far back, am i wrong, is it just the photo? I need a good saddle (wade) to get me by for awhile until I can get mine custom built. Wanted to stay around $1500 for a good used one. Then the Wife found this and it made me wonder. Any honest opinions? You can PM if you want.

Thanks for the help.

He might be a saddle maker But"I'll bet you $50 he dosent make THOSE saddles. Ebay is full of stuff like that, No twist on the stirrup leathers, the rigging is wrong..... the leather is stiff. I'd be very careful. Did you email him and ask if he makes them or does he buy and resell them?

No, I just visited the website and also watched the video he had. Just looking at the placement of the saddle leathers made me wonder. I will be passing on these saddles I think.

No offense intended Jeremy, and welcome to the forum.

I was just looking for an unbiased opinion, and wondered how a new hand made saddle could sell for $1500 when the cost of materials seems to run almost that much. Since i am still in the early stages of learning saddle making, I question just about everything, much to the other members chagrin. I have looked on eBay, and have actually found good saddles, and no doubt, there is a lot of questionable ones as well. I wasn't comparing your saddle to anything, just asking about them specifically.

Regards,

Dennis

I have talked to Jeremy, and ordered saddle trees from him. He is an honest business man. I have even phoned him after hours, and he's always been helpful. Rick

This is the last saddle I built on a good quality, reasonably priced tree I bought from Jeremy.

Look to be nice well built saddles to me. I have only rode for 45 + years now & I sure don't know everything there is to know about building saddles. But I do think I can spot a well built saddle when I see 1. I don't think you would go wrong with 1 of these saddles according to what you can see in the pictures.

J stead saddles are excellent! I searched and compared saddle makers for a very long time before being turned onto j stead by a friend of mine who also rides his saddles. I purchased mine a bit over a year ago and could not be happier. The quality is great! They ride great! You can customize the build any way you like! This saddle should be priced higher than it is don't be turned off by a fair price. I'm about to purchase my 2nd saddle from j stead and any saddle there after. It's one of the best saddles out there.

I know this is an old post, but saw a 2014 post, so i thought i would update, or add, so if anyone see's it, they have some fresh news on Jeremy's saddles. I'm a leather worker, and have built one saddle. Also, have saddle making friends. I just sold my Stead Wade to my packing buddy, for his hunters. In my opinion, and the opinion of a couple saddle making friends, they are good saddles. Jeremy, uses Heavy skirting leather on them. They are a little heavy, but that's do to the thick skirting leather. They are well built, and you won't be disappointed if you buy one. They are a production saddle. Meaning, jeremy has several guys working the shop. Hamleys, are production saddles also. Meaning, again, there are more than ONE person, working on the saddles. I will say this about seat size, i am 33" in the waist, and i previously, had a 16" seat, in my saddle. I got my Stead, in a 15 1/2" seat, and what a difference it made in my legs and balance. But, that being said, i wish i had ordered a 15" seat. The saddle i built myself, came in at a 14 3/4" seat. Remember, i'm 33" in the waist. What a difference that made, on placing me in the sweet spot. My legs hang down correctly, my butt didn't hurt. My point in all this is, no matter who you get a saddle from, get the right seat size. Too many ppl, are riding saddles that are to big for their body frame. So, if your looking for a Wade, Steads are a good buy. I can't make one for that price, but, that's ME, making one saddle at a time. Hope this helps the next person.

I had hoped to get a nice wade saddle from J. Stead when I viewed his website earlier this year (2015). Instead I got nothing but talk and after giving a $1,000.00 deposit, waiting 4 months, paying another $1,050.00 I received a saddle that wasn't even a wade much less what I ordered. I returned it (per J. Stead) - cost me $36.00 as he said he would reimburse the cost to me. It has now been 9 months and he won't reimburse me for the cost to return that saddle. Worse yet, the saddle I receive 3 months later, is all wrong. Wrong seat size, wrong seat color, wrong Breast Strap Size, - and not even close to the quality of what he shows on line. My saddle is about a 2 on a scale of 1-10. He also won't refund my money ($150.00) for the breast collar I returned as it was way too small for my horse. He has given me nothing but trouble, false starts (for months), and a junkie saddle - not worth $300.00 at most. Check with the Dallas, TX BBB. He wouldn't make any attempt to correct the situation.

I am sorry to hear that about J Stead saddles. After all the good words in earlier posts, it sounded like he was doing a good job of buiosing saddles. Perhaps the cost of materials has caught up with him, I know that to build a good saddle, my cost is easily over $1200 per, and that is really watching cost when making one.

Hi Bob,

That may be but my real concern is the dishonesty and misrepresentation he gave me over and over. He told me on 4/1/15 that if I got my deposit to him by the following Monday, he would get my tree ordered so my saddle would be in the next batch grouping;

4/10/15 Hi Frank, Yes I did get your check, I'll finish up a few saddles, so I don't get confused, I'll call you shortly before I get started.

7/29/15 Next Thursday (Jeremy Stead)

9/3/15 I haven't, I'm waiting on the tree, should be here before the end of the week (Jeremy Stead)

9/3/15, 2015, at 11:42 AM, Frank Johnson wrote: Have you started my saddle?

Just to make matters worse, he won't refund the money ($150.00) I paid for the Breast Collar which after receiving it, I discovered he did not make it the right length so I shipped it back via FedEx. He told the BBB in Dallas that he sent what he was supposed to and didn't know anything about the special length. I sent him a minimum of 6 emails with the specs and he acknowledged same:

9/15/15 OK, now I can't sieve through all those emails.

I have your breast collar info. I only need the saddle info please. (Jeremy Stead)

I can't quite figure out how he got so many compliments on his work, etc. I never asked him for any discounts. I paid him exactly as he asked and both times ran the check to h=the post office on the same day he requested payment. The garbage saddle and tack I received from him look like they were made by a beginner nothing at all like what he has on his website.

Lastly, when I complained about the problems and asked for a refund on the Breast Collar, His Reply was: "Too Funny"

Can you believe it? I still can't understand how he stays in business except for "what he displays" on the website.

Really sad to hear that about any one. Unfortunately, some times, it just happens and not much you can do about it.

Don't let it get you down. All comes to he who waits.

Call the Texas Attorney Generals office and file a complaint. It would be covered under wire and mail fraud since the check was sent through the mail.
