RIT dye for leather????

What do y'all know about dying with RIT? I ask because of this auction:

Does it set well or does it run on leather?

It will run on just about anything. That is because Ritt is a "union dye". That means it has several different types of dye in it - some for protein fibers, some for cellulose (plant) fibers. This is why serious dyers don't think much of it. It is impossible to exhaust - you can't possibly come up with the right fiber combination to suck up ALL of the dye molecules. There is always some left over.

I've actually had some luck using RIT dye on veggie tan leather. I make leather roses and I color them with scarlett RIT. Once I seal it with neatlac or something I've never had trouble with it running. but then, most people don't want to water their leather roses!

I have used powder Rit Dye mixed in Methylated Spirit to make like an alcohol-based dye that I use to wipe on dye on veg tan. . . I use the browner colors. . . I have not tried the dying method RIT suggests like if you are dying cloth. . .When I get the color I like mixing dye with the Spirit, I wipe on with a wool dawber thingy and then apply desired finish.

Here is a project I did using mostly Rit dye's disolved in alcohol. The light russet outside, & some of the green was spirit dye, but most of it was done with different shades & strengths of Rit dye's. What do You think?? Ed
