Restored 1800's Hames & Collar

Recommended Posts

I just finished restoring old rusty hames and collar my dad found in an original homestead barn on his family's property (probably 1800's?). It is going to be a wedding gift for a friend of mine :)

Very nice! I'd love to take on a project like that. And giving it as a wedding gift is a wonderful idea!

Just one question though, the hame strap at the top doesn't look right... Shouldn't it lay 90 degrees from what it is?

Thank you :)

The hames strap at the top runs through slots on the outer edge of the hames, there really is no other way for it to go. Even though it is a new strap, the old strap that was on it was done up the same way but was too weak to use.

Really great gift. What did you do to restore the piece? Did you take before pics?

Actually there are two metal loops that are missing from the hames! One would be on each side and move up and down the top of the hame and fit into the half circle parts where the strap now runs through. That is so the hames can be adjusted to fit different size collars. The hame strap would be through these pieces and would then lay flat on the top of the collar! Still is a great gift idea and will look beautiful on someone's wall!! Good Work!
