  1. Hello everyone, I Taught handbag pattern making at FIT in NYC. Had a small factory in Queens in the 80's for about 10 years...about a dozen employees. Used to lease all my sewing machines( mostly walking foot) for 6 months with purchase option to buy after that from Berkowitz in NYC. It was a great opportunity for me to grow. I had custom feet made for my machines(Juki 563) made by Berkowitz in NYC.None of that anymore. I make alligator and Python handbags using antique purse frames. Each frame is different. One of a kind bags.I work alone, I have no one to think bag patterns through with me. I'm always trying different stiffeners . I try to make a turned bag using exotic skins. Not the easiest. I'm looking for a stiffener that I had the opportunity to work with a few years ago. At the time , the company I worked with had their bags produced in Italy. This stiffener , that came from their contractor is a white opaque ( rubberized) product. It seems to have a "brushed" surface which makes it more flexible. I have looked all over the internet to find this item. It may be called "Liliane" . It is made in "Greece" I believe. Very nice product. I don't see it being made available in the USA. Please if you can help me find this item, I will be so appreciative. I do have some very small cutoffs of the product, if you'd like to see it Thank you Best, Joy Liotta Horvath text to 2032578099

I have just purchased a model G fortuna  #16107 black skiver.really old(I will be getting a table , servo motor and foot pedal with rod ).(no vacuum).  It has no vacuum which is fine with me. I have a newer Fortuna service manual forType 50 S-A0 and 50 S -AG. The manual I have is not helping me very much. The machine seems complete except it does not have lever to raise and lower presser foot. I can look on the manual you shared on this site a few years ago and  try to match the parts numbers. I do have the parts # from  the newer catalog. I need the lever to raise and lower the presser foot. The machine came with about 20 presser feet(made in Italy) many duplicates. also a few guide bars. Can you help me? I  had a Fortuna Skiver many years ago ( From Hoffman company) and then I had a chinese copy about 20 years ago. I do not want another copy.  I bought this skiver because it is a fine machine . the parts are fine precision.  It looks like everything else is here, but I could be wrong.I took its apart I don't even know if this machine can  to clean it up and have laid out all the parts. Can you help? I would be so thrilled if you could. Please let me know. Thank you

Joy,   Sorry but I dont have access to parts on most of the powered machines. I would suggest Campbell-Randall in Boerne, TX as my first call.

      Thanks

  4. I need to purchase a new or good(used) skiver for myself. Hopefully one that's been regularly serviced. I've owned a fortuna skiver for a few years many years ago( purchased from Hoffman Brothers in Illinois) and later a Chinese model which wasn't the greatest. It may have been me. I need to skiver alligator skin. I've been hand skiving it for over a year, and it is just too painful time wise.I am located in Bridgeport, Ct., USA . My email is bagstudio@aol.com.Thank you for your time.
  5. Hi, On bags in stores, specifically Nancy Gonzales and alligator bags, there are matching edge cotes used in colors like pink, red, blue, green etc. Does anyone know where to get these? Do you make them yourself? How can I get colors of edge cote? Please help!!!! Thanks, Joy
  6. On many alligator bags in store(specifically Nancy Gonzales), the manufacturer uses a matching edge cote to finish raw edges.I've seen reds, rusts, navys, turquoises whites and many shades of brown. Since Fieings only offers two colors...black and brown...Where can I get the colored edge cotes? Does anyone know? Can you make it yourself? I really need this info. Please help!!!! Joy
  7. When I learned leather working ,I was told to use a slightly higher table ...and always stand when cutting. You have more control over the amount of pressure you can exert on the knife.Good luck. Also, if cutting garment leather, either use a cutting board(butcher block style)or self healing vinyl cutting mat. Years ago , all the hand cutters in the garment center would place a block of wood under the top side of their cutting boards. This a created a slight angle to the board...kind of like a drafting table.but not as extreme. Joy
  8. Scott, I'm not sure if this will help you, but I always make the holes for handstitching with a sewing machine without any top or bottom thread.Try to use a leather needle. Sorry if this doesn't work. Joy
  9. Well I broke down and bought both machines from one person. .I got an Adler model 69-373 lightly used (made in Germany) for 1350., and a leather skiver(white) new copy of Fortuna 110v motor ,no vacuum(thank god..the noise was obscene)complete unit with table for 1000. bought both from Itzhak Erez at Miami Industrial Sewing Machines in North Miami Beach.I never met him in person, but he knows machines.I had a few long discussions with him about what I needed a machine to do. He is about 70 years old and really knows his stuff.I don't work on very very heavy leather.more like garment weight and up to a few ozs. I used to have some machines and explained what I had hated about the old machines. Itzak was right on it. He assured me that I'd be happy ,,,and I am.He is the best. When I'm in Miami in February, I 'll go visit him. What a nice man.He didn't want to sell me what I didn't need.I love my machines. They do exactly what he said they would. They arrived crated and already set up with instructions and drawers plus attachments in the tables(I paid for crating and shipping).Thank you Itzak. Joy

  12. hi, i'm a bag maker who sometimes uses leathers; mostly garment weight or slightly heavier.I need to thin leather in seams and foldovers and also when I'm covering a metal purse frame with leather.I presently do not have a skiver.I used to have a Fortuna, but not any more.Is there anyone with experience who can do this for me for a fee...?,,,or is there anyone near me(Fairfield, Ct.) that is willing to allow me to skive my own pieces on their machine for a fee?I am pretty desperate. Please help.Or maybe someone wants to sell me a skiver.(no three phase and no exhaust) I can be reached at bagstudio@aol.com Thanks, Joy H.
