Question About Beveling Edges On Soft Leather

Recommended Posts

Would a size 1 beveler be suitable for beveling the edges of soft leather with a thickness of 1mm or less? I am just wondering at this thickness, the beveller might just drag the leather. A lot of demo videos I have seen online seem to use a slightly thicker and rigid leather as examples

Thankyou.

it might work, but for soft thin leathers (such as garment weight), it's usually better to do a rolled edge instead. Check out Kevin King's pinned topics on making wallets to show a good example. Another way to do it is just fold your piece over and glue it down, then stitch a liner over the back.

Size one beveler from whom? Using a small size Ron's tool beveler I can do leather that thin. Horse shoe brand ones won't. They're designed for thicker leather. With that said, neither will do soft leather. The leather will drag and look horrible. You really need relatively firm leather to be able to edge them. Skiving and turning is a good alternative.

Thankyou for the reply. I'll check our Kevin King's pinned topics.

Andrew, I did not realize quality can differ considerably between vendors. Quite a few people on the forums seem to swear by Ron's tools.

Rons edgers are very nice. I hear nice things about Barry king tools as well but have never used them. Horse shoe brand are also very nice but they're designed for saddle work and the toes are long enough that they interfere when you try to edge thing leathers.
