    Searching for Drizzt armor
  1. While I do not know how to tan shark skin, I suggest using it with caution on a purse or wallet...or anything that will suffer much handling. Shark skin does contain denticles which can cause severe irritation is rubbed the wrong direction. Check out the wikipedia article on denticles. Not to say don't use the skin, just be aware that it has a grain.
  2. Does anyone know of a tutorial for making traditional soft leather boots? or have experience doing it themselves? As far as I can tell 5 oz. leather would probably be the way to go, but I have no idea how many pieces the boots would be made of and if any stretching would be necessary. I was thinking of going with mid-calf height if it matters.
  3. I have a set of scabbards here and I am going to vinegaroon them to that beautiful black/indigo color. The only problem is that then the oils in the leather are brought out. It seems like all of the oils from inside the leather are pushed to the surface. The finish is supposed to be a mutad, flat black. Not shiny. How do I avoid the shiny look of the oils and still keep the leather properly treated and waterproof?
  4. Yeah, google directed me to his page a year or so ago. His is modified to present his own interpretation; mine is supposed to look like the armor on the new cover art.
  5. I need to create an accurate replica of the Drizzt armor... That's my goal. I have permission form Mr. Lockwood and Mr. Salvatore to do so and Mr. Lockwood would like the templates emailed to him for his personal enjoyment. Are there any computer programs I can use to design my pieces or anything that will take a real template and convert it to a digital format? I would like to be able to scale the design; hopefully to scale it down and make it "elf-sized". Also, if anyone has any other help to offer for me don't hesitate. I will be making the whole thing from scratch with no prior experience. P.S. I realize that with the most recent novels Drizzt doesn't wear traditional armor but I still want to make a set.
  6. Can I "stew" the iron (cast iron tubs pieces) in an open container? or must i seal the container? also if i taped the leather together to sew it should i do something special to the area where the tape was before i dye the leather?
  7. I am making myself some sword sheaths and stumbled across the vinegaroon method, which seemed alot better than the crap black dye we have currently. I saw the whole neutralizing thing also. My problem is that I also am going to paint small scrollwork across the edge of the scabbard and I don't know if I should add a finish between the dye and the paint (I will be using a paint pen if that makes any difference) or if I should just go dye, dry, then paint...then finish. Suggestions?
  8. Im guessing the answer would be a chuckle followed by "Dead."
  9. Ok, so Ive got a sheath idea down. I just planned on doing a simple scrollwork pattern across the flat of the blade (sheath) after it ahs been dyed. I will dye them black and use a purple paint-pen to do the fine lines. Other than that I planned on 2 small pinstripes to follow the curve of the blade on the sharpened edge.
  10. Yea, my dad is currently working on his suit so I "borrowed" some of the left over stuff (all veg tanned) and make a few cut outs. The leather is a heavier set (8-9?) leather and I plan on waxing the sheaths to offer some protection from the elements and some stability. Drizzt's description. What color is willpower with a bit of righteouness thrown in?
  11. So I have recently undergone the venture of making myself a belt, froggs, and sheaths for my two swords (Drizzt replicas ). They are very uncurvy scimitars and the blades are 30" long. I have a very limited tool supply (borrowed from the school, they hadn't been seen in over 9 years...then i found them) and was wondering about some possible decorative ideas for the sheaths. They will eventually be used in a Drizzt armor costume. So suggestions about either the sheath decorations or color schemes for the armor would be wonderful.
