Skiving Edges

Hi all, Iam making myself a work bag out of 3.5mm thick black died through veg tan. After attatching pockets etc Iam ready to put the bag together. Question is should I skive the edges that are to be hand sewn to half thicknes before sewing together. Thanx for any advice as this is my first large bag project.

I probably would, just to reduce the bulk on the edges. That will make it much easier to punch the awl through.

Sounds like a good plan. Like Rawhide said, it does make it easier to work with the edges when they are thinner!

Sure…. Just don’t skive to much…

I would skive it down to half the thicknes. Much more then that would waken the

stitching to much… a strap or belt you can skive down thin because it will have

thinker part that will hold it…. But when It comes to edges of bags one need to

be careful how much one takes off.

Hah! Where were you yesterday when I skived right through to the stamping on a business card wallet :0/ LOL Thank gawd it had some things about it I wasn't happy with anyway so calling it yet anuther newbie lesson learned - fresh skiving blades are MUCH more effective than the dull one that came with the skiver bought used ;0) (smacking myself in the head )

Thanx for the advice . Advice taken and stitching a lot easier will post picture of finished bag for critique later.
