Oil Leaked Out

Recommended Posts

I made a belt, burnished the edge with saddle soap and added neatsfoot oil. I rubbed it vigorously then wore it the next day. When I looked at the end of the day I saw it left yellow stains on the front of my shirt that was tucked in. Can I do some final step so it doesn't leak? I have resolene but didnt add it because I like the dull matte look. But.... a shiny belt beats a leaky belt.

You over oiled it. The problem is not that the oil leaked out, you do not want too much oul in it. The problem will be finding a way to get the rest of the oil out. Not so easy.

I oiled too much once. What a pain! The only thing that finally worked after letting the piece sit for 3 months in cat litter... was Dawn dish liquid followed by saddle soap. Your mileage may vary but for me that was enough to lift a good amount of oil...however, the excess water from "washing" it didn't do the design any good.
