want to make this cuff

I would love to make this cuff. I have a few questions about it that you folks may be able to answer.

1) what color dye do you think was used, or what method do you think was used to get the color

2) the spots/rivets (not sure what they are, could you tell me) are they nickel plated or just stainless steel? What do you think?

3) the buckles, anyone ever seen these? Where to get them? are they nickel or stainless?

4) The gray material inside the cuff, any clues as to what that is?

Looks like Fiebings British Tan dye to me.

Buckles look like ones I've seen in the Tandy catalog (or any standard supplier like that)

Gonna go with rivets - you can get them from Tandy too, and you'll need the proper setters for 'em too. They look like they're nickel plated, but old.

Don't know what the grey stuff is though...

The buckles look like nickle plated brass - you can see spots where the brass shows through on the lower buckle (I think, interpreting photos is always a guessing game).

I think the rivet heads look galvanized, not stainless or nickel, which makes me think they didn't come from a leather craft place but from a hardware source and they might not be rivets at all.

The lining ? Impossible to tell from the picture. Could be fabric, could be lining leather.

That color could come from oil and aging. The piece looks to have been around a while, judging by the condition of the metal bits.

I'm just guessing but I'd say the gray stuff is ... let's see ... hmmmm ... Oh, yeah! ... just kiddin' ... my guess is that the gray stuff, the lining is chrome tan leather. If you cross section a piece of dyed leather and find a bluish color that's a dead give away that it's chrome tanned. To me that a blue-gray tone and who knows how accurate the photo is in color tone, hence my guess is chrome tan leather; which may resolve issues that Johanna has mentioned before about allergies to veg tan leather, esp. when you're dealing with stuff that is worn, especially worn against the skin. That's just a guess - a WAG!

I like to see what you eventually make if you'll share a photo with us. Good luck on your quest.

My guess on the lining would be grey felt. There's a tutorial on cuff and other [Adults Only] stuff that advocates felt as a lining.
