  1. As Twinoaks said, I sometimes have to trim the prongs on the T nut so that it wont over penetrate though the layers of leather. As far as a setting tool, I bought several fender washers from Home Depot and glued them together. I forget the actual size, but the inside hole just needs to be big enough for the T-Nut collar to fit inside. I put this under the leather and tap the T nut into the leather. The washer setup gives you a good base to set the T nut and allows clearance for the collar while giving a solid base to set the prongs.
  2. I have been making leather holsters for quite a while now and have decided to purchase a sewing machine. Hand stitching gets old pretty quick. I have been told that I will need a cylinder arm machine rather than a flat bed machine. Is this true and if so, why? I will be sewing two pieces of 8 ounce leather together. I have looked at the Tippmann Boss and while it's in my price range, for a little more I can get a new, powered machine. I would really like to find a used machine at a reasonable price that would suffice for now and perhaps purchase something like an Artisan Toro 3000 at a later date. What machine(s) would you recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! I will try them. One question though, can someone please explain deglazing? I have heard the term but am not sure of the definition or the process. Thanks again for the help.
  4. Hello all, I have started making my own leather holsters and am quite happy with the results so far. While looking at professionally made holsters, I have noticed that even though the leather is the same thickness as the leather I use, the holster is much more rigid than my finished product. I have tried the hot water molding, and many other techniques (like adding alcohol or a drop of soap to the water), but I still cannot get my holsters as stiff as the professionals. Do they put on some kind of finish (chemical, coating, etc.) that stiffens up the finished product? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
