I know this is most likley opening up a can of worms lol

i have a guitar strap i am working on and might do some painting on some of the carved areas along with dyeing some parts

what type of paint is used

You can use most any kind of acrylic paint to paint on leather. The ones I use most often are Liquitex that I pick up at Hobby Lobby or Delta Ceramcoat that I get at Walmart. There are lots of other brands that will probably work just fine too. Always try them on scrap first to see what kind of results you're going to get. Most often when using acrylic paint on leather I'll thin it down quite a bit with water. You can build up color by adding more layers of paint. Straight out of the bottle, it's too thick for my taste and the results are kind of like painting a barn. Even with paint, it's still nice to be able to see the texture of the leather in your project.

I've recently been converted to using Golden Acrylics for painting. They're very fluid (noticeably thinner than Liquitex or Ceramcoat), go on without brushstrokes, cover beautifully, and come in a jillion colors. They're sold at Michael's Arts & Crafts, but they're pricey there. I think that moving forward, it's going to be cheaper (and more fun) for me to go to Dick Blick's in Boston (they also do web sales). I generally paint small detailed things, so I like the fact that the bottles make it easy to dispense a very small drop into my palette; it'll make the paint go farther.

Now I just need to find an easy way to set them up at a con so I can find and use what I want without knocking everything else over. I may end up building something...
