I am using a black fielbings oil dye. I will then paint teal stripes on my piece. then i have to put pink letters on it. Is it best to topcoat the black, then paint teal, then topcoat again, then pink? Not sure and I have alot of topcoating issues, it always smudges and looks poorly. This is something i am still trying to figure out which is best to use, etc.

I tried bag kote and Proclear both with poor, spotty results

Try buffing the black after it has dried to get rid of extra pigment. I usually only top coat after everything else is done, but there's no reason you can't topcoat the black and then topcoat again after the acrylics are on (if you're still having smudging problems). If there's one thing I've learned in leathercraft, it's that there's no one "right" way of doing things.
