My Patcher Needs A Table Or Treadle Base

Recommended Posts

I have a Singer 29K62 without anything to attach it to and work it from. Is there any reason a standard old (as in vintage) treadle will not work? I think the original bases for these machines are a little wider than the standard ones AND of course I would not have the original top which is unique to the 29 series machines. For a top I figured I'd cut out of (good, strong) wood the unique shape of the 29 series tops, attach it to a standard old treadle. Then to make it two levels (like the originals), build a raised area on the right side with some 2x4s and attach another top (on top of that). I assume there are no reproductions? Anyone got an extra original laying around? OR have a different idea - I'd be glad to hear it. Thanks for any help you can offer!

I just picked this up yesterday ( 29k-58 ) with all the shoe/boot anvils and attachments for it.

I was surprised to find this locally after scourging ebay and the net, on an off chance I did a local search on Craigslist and bingo. There were a couple of bases for the Patcher Singers without the heads also.

If I was you I would try Craigslist and see if there isn't something close to you.

It would probably work best to just make it on a flat top because it'll still have alot of room underneath the arm.We put alot of these on stands & sell the that way.

Might be of some help

Just found this link looking up some info...  It should be of some help for making a table top which you can move around with the Head as you like..

You can download the user manual for the 29's here if you like.

Thanks ya'll, I just did some rough measurements - and the thing is... I'll be sitting way over to the left hand side of a standard/non-patcher singer treadle (picked one up cheap today). Not really a big deal I guess, but not ideal either. I will have to make the top atleast 9" out past the left side leg IF I plan to use one of the "29K's wooden flat-top table attachments" like is in reaper's link (thanks btw), but even that would need to be modified to work with the shorter drop with a flat table top as sewmun suggested. Sure wish I could locate an original, I do check craigslist all the time... maybe I'll expand my search to other cities. Any other suggestions ?

I could take measurements and draw up a diagram (was a mechanical designer for a bit) and scan them for you. Dunno if you can weld or know someone who could do it for you?

That would work as a stop gap until you come across a good solid original base if you really want that. Besides with the measurements you would have an idea of just how to go about building something that would keep it at the standard height and dimensions.

I'll also keep an eye out  in Florida, there are loads of Machines and parts because of the Sail Boat, Cattle, Canvas and Custom Shoe and Repair Shops in almost every city. I am sure one will show up in not to long a time and I can let you know on the board if you like.

Yes,the long arm bases are hard to find we need a couple ourselves,I just met a guy & Weaver's auction this yr that brought me 2-29's 1-shortarm & 1-longarm in the back of a horsetrailer they had the heads still on the stands(bad way to haul) & of course they were bouncing arond back there & broke the longarm stand in about 10 pieces.

Oh,well at least the head didn't get hurt.

Customdoug, yes the arm of your machine will be way out on the left side of the stand if you used a treadle base.We usually put them on a standard 20x48" flat top table with one of our DC servo motors w/a builtin speed reducer & they work great.

OK, guys here's what I think I'm gonna do... I'm going to rig up a flat top for this standard treadle base that I've already bought and see if it's bearable long enough to get something welded up (yes Reaper I'd love to get some measurements and a scan if you can do it and it's not too much trouble). Then try to come up with some scratch to get one of those servo motors - they sound better the more I hear about them and now that I've actually worked an old treadle  . Hey sewmun, you guys have a website?... I searched but didn't come up with one.

I can't figure out how to post a picture directly from Flickr but here's a link to the table I made using my regular (smallish) singer treadle base - mounted a very big 29K62 on it. You'll note I had to build a shelf for the head to sit on, to get a similar distance from the end of the arm to the table's top. I also had to buy an 8ft leather belt.

Then I decided I'd make myself a flat table attachment, so as to make it a little more flexible :

that looks yummy. I'd love to have a treadle for my 29k 72 just because sometimes I am in places with no AC available to plug into. The industrial stands are rare alone probably since they were usually sold with the head and not separate. I saw one on ebay a couple months ago he wanted two hundred for it as a opening bid... don't know what he got. Your idea looks a lot more practical and the treadle base you used is a ton more available too. I found one online place that wanted 70 for each side piece, 70 for the top and then more for the pedal and the mechanism...they're freaking nuts in my book but I guess if you want it bad enough you'd cough it up. Your flat bed adapter table piece is great too, some of the new ones made by consew have that feature, does make em more versatile.

I'm in Florida too, guess I never considered a sail shop but now that you mention it..... Aren't the industrial tables for this designed to be stood up for use? I.e. these aren't made for a sitting operator are they? At least the ones sold with it aren't designed for a sitting operator......
