Thread Size And Type Question

Recommended Posts

I know I have seen some info on this topic before, but can't find it again, so:

What type and size thread do you guys use for your holsters? Machine sewn or hand sewn (I do both), I am interested in what you guys feel the best threads are.

Western Holsters, 5cord/4cord Barbour's Linen. Duty and Off Duty, 277/277 or 277/207 Nylon or Poly, usually Coats Poly or Linhanyl Nylon. I have used Eddington Poly on Western holsters and it works well and looks good too. Barbour's six cord Linen or repair thread for hand stitching. I don't know what the difference between Barbour's repair and std linen is, it seems the same to me. Everything I have is left twist and the Nylon and Poly are Bonded of course.

I primarily use the barbours linen thread 6 cord on everything I do. I really like waxing my own thread and that seems to be my favorite size thread to use. I do everything by hand right now though so I cant add anything for machines.

Also when I am doing inlays, the inlay portion I will use a 3 cord thread for that then use the 6 cord for everything else.

I use Linhanyl bonded nylon 277 on the top and bottom, although I'm thinking about trying the setup that troop is using with the 346 on top. I like the look of fat thread on gunleather.

MAX, a question if you don't mind. Where do get your thread? I prefer linen as you do, but it's difficult for me to find and I'm only able to get small amounts at a time when available. Thanks, Mike

I have been looking around for the Barbour's Linen Threads also. I found one place that has a decent looking selection: Campbell Bosworth Machinery Co. I don't know if the prices are reasonable or not. Much more expensive than poly in any case. Upwards of $40 for a 1lb spool. I'm not that familiar with the Barbour's, so that may or may not be a good deal. I'm sure others will know other sources.

Is the Barbour's linen thread suitable for machine sewing, or should I just stick with poly for that? I have heard that some machines say not to use linen.

I use Barbour's Linen in the Campbell #1 1/2 needle and a #2 awl for 5cord/4cord. I use the paraffin based wax lube for the top, I'm dry in the bobbin. Never tried Linen in any of the threaded needle machines, I've run poly in the Campbell, works fine. Campbell's prices are ok.
