Best Thread For Belts & Holsters

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have a newbie question for ya. I am getting stuff ready to start leathercrafting and am having a hard time figuring out the best thread for belt and holster stitching.

What have you found that works the best as far as strength and appearance?

Which size of ply?

What type, waxed or unwaxed, linen or artificial?

I am kinda leaning towards the waxed linen thread after all the reading I have done but would like some advice from the experts, people who have actually made holsters, belts, etc.

I appreciate all the help, I look forward to your replies,

Peace and blessings,

Vincenzo

If your going to sew by hand i would get 6 cord linen waxed or unwaxed. You can wax it your self if you want to.

Good question Vencenzo. For my practice pieces I've been using the Tandy Artificial sinew in various colors because it comes in smaller inexpensive spools. I works nicely but tends to fray if using pieces longer than 4 ft at a time. I'm going to give the linen thread a try next time I have to buy for an actual project.
