Edge Bevelers. Rons Tools Or Barry King?

Recommended Posts

HI guys .. just wanted your opinion as which of the two would be a better choice. Also if I am going to make small leather goods and hand bags..what sizes are the ones I need to buy?

Issue is that both have various different types of bevelers, however, two main types stand out in each brand.

Rons tools--- Montana Edgers and Roung Edge Edgers

Barry King--- Common Edger and Grooved Edgers

I am assuming French edgers are perhaps not best suited for my needs??!!

So my questions is which of the two brands would any one prefer or if either one of the two is noticeably better than the other. And secondly which type/variant within each brand do I need to pick?? Sizes??

Sorry its a complicated question but they are both expensive tools so I need to be really sure ..

Thanks guys

The quality of either will be great.

I like the narrow end on Ron's tool, it prevents you from hitting the work surface with the edge of the tool when edging.

An edger like the Montana edger will take the edge off your leather for finishing, smaller is better for what you want.

The round edger can be used to make a channel used when folding the leather, it will take a deeper cut.

Thanks Itch... I'll get #2 for sure I will mostly be making small hand bags, wallets, card cases, credit card holders etc so not sure what other sizes I need but I think perhaps a size 1, 2 and 3 should be good..

Save your money, buy the #1 or #2 and see how that works for you first.

Hi all,

This seems as good a place as any to throw this out. A couple of weeks ago I bought a #3 round edger from Ron's tools and couldn't be happier. I've been using Tandy edgers until now and there's no going back.

The people at Ron's were very helpful and a pleasure to deal with. I make mostly strap items and find that finishing the edges takes the most time. Wish I'd known sooner what a difference it makes to have such a tool. It will save me a lot of time and sandpaper.

I keep hearing about the quality of these American edgers.

I guess I'll have to try some of Ron's out, once I have some investing money again.

Same here ..I dont have any at the moment .. But when I do I rather have a top quality product.. After all we are in this hobby (most of us) for pleasure and not here to deal with annoying tools
