  1. Luigi makes awesome cases,i am new to leather but i read a tutorial on doing leather cups.In that tutorial they beveled both pieces of leather at 45 degrees and sewed through both just as if you were doing a belt.I imagine it to be a very hard thing to master.Good luck and hopefully some one with more experience can give directions on how to do the beveling and sewing. My understanding is you bevel the edges to 45 degrees, glue the two edges together then sew through them. The threads you see on both sides of the case are the same thread, just like a belt but at an angle.I would do several practice pieces first as the tutorial claimed getting the positioning of the needle correct is hard.
  2. I am new to leather but i have seen people in my business(automotive) approve work for a certain amount then say they did not just to get it for free or a discount.I know nothing about saddles so i can only give an opinion. If you think the saddle is worth what you were charging then do not give it to her cheaper, she is playing you.If you think it is not up to par with your normal work then let it go for a little less but not much. Some people really truly do not care about you and what service you have provided and only want a deal.
  3. I am new here and i do not think it is needed.People will still get mad and all upset for some stupid reason. Then mods will start to issue warnings, time outs or outright bans. It works on some boards but here i think it would cause trolling. If you are on other boards you know what that is,if not it is when some one post just to get a rise out of people and cause problems. This is a leather board and politics do not belong here.I believe it would make this place less attractive to the new people. There are plenty of boards were people can get bent out of shape. My vote(not that you are asking) would be for a home town forum of all the different states. This way people of certain areas would know what is going on around them and also get local help if needed.Sorry for the off topic suggestion.
  4. Very nice job,it appears that you folded a single piece of leather to make the main belt thicker as i only see one stitch line.Is there a reason for that or was it just for looks.
  5. I hope you are not offended by my above post,i respect your girlfriends views and find it admirable that you are trying to find a way to enjoy your new hobby with her in mind.I wish i had an answer for you,i should not have posted as it was not an answer to your original post.Hope it all works out for you.
  6. Is there anything else she wants you to do or stop doing. If so make a trade, tell her you want to do leather work and in return you will give up some other thing. Also maybe some people here would be willing to sell you some scraps and on occasion put in an extra piece for you here in there. Hey look at me top of page 2.
  7. Hi everyone,i am posting this here since i will spend most of my time in this section.I have never worked with leather so the next few months will be interesting. My first intro into making my own holster was on a gun forum were someone posted there own creation.I had never even thought such a thing was possible.Since i need a new holster and have several guns without holsters i thought i would give this a try.I am thinking about buying some scraps to practice on,eleather has a 3lb bag of veg tan for 15 bucks, seems like a good investment.I also have al stohlman books(hand sewing and holster making)on the way. Some newb questions you can answer What are the basic tools i will need,i have read so much lately i think i overloaded my brain and i do not remember half the places i read it.I would like to use this thread as reference, hopefully some of you will not be tired of answering the same questions repeatedly. When i am ready to start would the double shoulder be appropriate for holsters, seems to be cheaper then other cuts(due to size)but i am not sure of how many holsters could be made from one piece. If i want to make a belt for carry, what is the appropriate cut and weight of leather for that.can one piece be used or do i need to glue together 2 pieces for the correct thickness. Any other advice would also be appreciated as well,i know there will be a learning curve but i look forward to it. On the slim chance some one here is from georgia, are there any places between atlanta and athens were i could get supplies as apposed to the internet. Thanks, richard.
