  1. whats the difference between vegtan tooling leather and normal vegtan?
  2. Hello all, i was wondering, i dont know if this is a stupid question or not but, is there oil tanned leather available for sale that is not pre dyed? im asking because i have made a few steampunk utility bags out of veggie tanned leather and though i like them, they are wayyyyy to rigid and does not really fit to you like i want it too. i dye my steampunk stuff a rustic sorta way so i really want to dye it myself. any ideas of where if any where i can get some? i dont think tandy leather has it
  3. lol, really? i shop at tandy and never seen that before. hmmm, thats interesting. still, id like to know how to, if possible do the texture on my own
  4. Hello all. I wanted to know if anyone has any techniques or ideas on how i would go about making a snake skin texture on regular veggie tanned leather? Ive got decently close using using a stamp tool but, it looks more like fish scales to me. what i was thinking of doing was tracing a snake texture onto tracing paper, then tracing the design onto my leather, then using an x-acto knive and cutting slighty under the traced texture lines so this was the texure is more 3d and realistic. i know youre thinking just buy snake skin and what i want to do is very time consuming. thats ok, i have time :D
  5. lol thanks, ya i tried a few coats and im getting there. i think ill give a few more and see how it goes, but its lookin awesome :D
  6. Hi all, so ive been just getting my veggie tanned leather from tandy and just apply dye. i notice sometimes that the dye doesnt soak in well or that even after a few days, the dye just comes right off. Im using eco flow dye and prefer to stick with it since the fiebings dye is very extreme, even when i apply it lightly. so what im asking is: 1)is there some sort of prep im supposed to do before just jumping in and applying dye? 2)also, is there a way to make the fiebings dye no so extreme? even when i've used it very very lightly (even on a light color) it seems to just be way darker than it should be. 3) is alot of dye supposed to come off when using a leather sealant like lets say fiebing's acrylic resolene ? i notice some comes off so i tend to apply it very lightly and not rub it in too much until the 2nd coat. thanks in advanced !
  7. Hi all ! I have a question, I'm making a leather mask and it has a fish / sea creature kinda theme to it and wanted to know if anyone knows of a way to give my leather a very wet / oily finish to it? The mask is faded black and blue and i wanted to simulate, sort of ,the way a fish looks when its fresh out of the water (all slimey). I dont think im goin to get too slimey of a look but i guess a high gloss is what im going for. The only sealant for leather i have is fiebings acrylic resolene. I usually use a 50/50 mix of it and water, let dry for a day and apply another coat. Would say, maybe a non watered down coat or 2 give this finish or am i with the wrong product for this finish? thanks in advanced all !
  8. Ooooh, ok thanks for the info. i didnt know that the sides would match up to the main bag part because its supposed to be sewn to the sides and the bottom. ya, i thought you had to line it up differently, thanks again !
  9. Hi all, i have a question. How would i go about lining up holes on a bag thats "square" ? i have a overstitcher tool and wanted to know, before i go about making the stitching marks, if i just do it as normal on the 3 pieces (2 sides and main bag part). In the picture i attached is the bag type im talkin about. If you see, the sides (2) and the main bag part are the only parts there is...so i guess its sort of like a square. thanks in adavanced !
  10. Hello all. I wanted to know how would i go about making the following belt bag from leather? I'm a beginner but have made lots of regular bags lately so, i got my craft down pretty good. I'm thinking this might be made from 5-6 oz leather...also, i'm going to attach belts on the left and right side with rivets ( the leather will be thicker) so i can adjust it to my waist. is there any type of forming or something i should do to make it not flare up on the sides that will rest against my back side? i dont need a step by step on this, just a very brief opinion. Im thinking of just getting the 5-6 oz leather and cutting it for the base of the belt, then sewing the bags to the base then getting the thicker belt and rivet it to the first piece so, there will be sort of 3 layers, if that makes sense. im not making exactly this but, something sort of similar. thanks in advanced !
  11. so the super shene is crap? is it decently reliable at least because i already applied 2 coats of it to my projects got me a little worried now
  12. hi all, ive start my first leather projects and theyre going pretty well. my question is, im using eco flo leather dyes, how do i "seal" the dyes in after theyre applied? i have a bottle of "eco flow super shene leather finish" my friend gave but im not 100% if this is a sealant of just a gloss finish. is there anything else, if this isnt acceptable as a finish, that i can use to finish my leather to give a professional look? what is recommended to "buff" my leather after sealing? i get all my supplys from a tandy leather store by the way, since i prefer goin to stores v.s. online ordering. one last question, do you apply gum tragacanth before or after sealing your leather to round the edges ? im asking because i noticed a great deal of dye, enough to reveal the natural color of the leather, was removed after i dyed the leather then applied gum tragacanth. thanks in advanced all :D !
  13. great ideas guys, i got a good idea what to do now :D thanks !
  14. well would carving make the whole design around 1/16" thick? thats my problem, how would i do that? would i carve the design, then carve a slight bigger design around it and stamp it in?
