Howdy Philip

When I built my cutting table, I went to the local glass / plexiglass dealer and bought a sheet of white poly board. The white poly board is the stuff that is used for cutting boards. I don't have a lot of room, I built my table 42inches x 6 foot. I talked with the sales person, and they are set up to cut what ever dimensions that I needed.

I don't know where you are, but you may check the phone book for exact location of the dealer.

Happy tooling

Tim

When I worked at Tandy, all our cutting tables had Poundo boards over the surface. When one would get too worn, we'd flip it over. It took a lot to wear out the Poundo boards, and it was easier on our knives and punches when our less experienced customers drove through the leather all the way into the table. Another nice feature of those big tables was the shelf underneath for storage.

I use a large cutting board like you can get at Wal Mart or similar store and move it as i cut. I have worked at palces that just used a wood top and they were soon cut up pretty bad. Then it would grab your knife and make cutting hard to do.

Hi Philip

I built my cutting/layout table plain and simple out of 2/4's for legs and frame and a 4 x 8 sheet of 1/2 inch chip board for the top. After about 5 years the side that gets the most use got to looking a little tatty so I just spun it 180 degrees and it should be good for another 5. No, it is no good for pounding on but that was not the intent. It is purely for cutting and putting stuff on. I had been cutting on a table with a 2 x6 top and found that pretty quick it started shedding long pointy slivers of pine that had a tendency to get stuck in things, like my hand!
