Barry King Edger

Recommended Posts

Hi there all, looking at BK edgers and was after some feedback on what leaves a more rounded edge out of the 3 on offer ?

The Grooved

The Common

The Bissonnette

It's for bridle and saddle work.

Or does anyone have another brand that gives a more rounded edge?

This is my first post, so a big hello to you all at Leatherworker! Look forward to conversing

I'm sorry I can't answer your question, but if you contact Barry on his Web site he will get back to you pretty quick.

When I was buying some of his tools and had questions, this is what I did...very nice guy.

No matter which tool you get from him, you wouldn't be disappointed.

I haven't had any of Barry King's common edgers but have sold a few of his grooved and bisonettes. They both have about the same rounded profile. Either style would be appropriate. Between those two it comes down to your prefences and sharpening skills.

You will either like the Bissonette or you will like the grooved, you seldom like both. Barry's edgers are very good, personally I like Ron's edgers better. Older edgers like Gomph and Osborne (C.S. and H.F.) were used in the harness trade and tend to run big, #1, #2, and #3 being the most useful sizes, #3 or even a #4 for saddle and bridle work. I've used a lot of edgers over the years, but I found Ron's and I liked them so much, I bought a whole set; expensive, but I have never regretted it.

Edgers may not seem that important at first glance, but they can be used a lot of different ways if you just think "can I use an edger to do that".

Bruce Johnson has a bunch of edgers at reduced prices, even some of Ron's. All of his stock looks to be in very good condition. I buy from him often and have not been disappointed.

I have some Barry king common edgers as well as rons. Both are great. Both do rounded edges well. The smallest size of Rons is better for super thin leather (3oz or less). But other than that, they are both great.

I started with a used set when I started. I have BK grooved edgers and a couple of Ron's. For me, my go to are my BK's are my go too. I agree with Chee......my BK edger in the 000 is not as good as the 1, 2, or 3. I may try to get me one from Ron in the smaller size to try it out. I also ditto Art's comment. I would definitely give Bruce Johnson a serious look to start out. Good luck!

Hi all, thanks for all your feedback, much appreciated!

I ended up doing a bit of a backflip and picking up Dixon grooved edgers # 1, 2, 3 locally.

Has anyone else used these? Interested in your thoughts..

Regards

I have both Dixon and Barry King.

The Dixons were probably the most disappointing purchase ever. They needed a lot of work before they would cut nicely or even cut (sharpening with a diamond rod and polishing on a piece of leather cord with polishing compound on it) and the shape of the shank was a bit awkward - they're probably meant for doing straps.

The Barry King edger are VERY good. Maybe a smidge too short/small, but either way very sharp and easy to work with. I liked them so much that I never bothered buying Ron's edgers, though I was contemplating buying both at some point. Maybe I will, if I decide to do thinner stuff at some point.

Well after picking up my Dixon edgers and doing some extensive work with them over the last week, I feel somewhat qualified to review them..

They didn't have an edge on them when they arrived but I don't find that to be much of a problem. Although they did take a lot of work to get going well.

No makers mark, which would make it hard for resale I'm presuming.

The groove was quite short compared to old Dixons. But the most disappointing fact was the groove is crooked !!

I managed to pick up an old No. 3 and after comparing the new to old I was so shocked at the difference in quality that I rang the place of purchase, had a chat to them about it and they offered a

refund, which I thought was quite generous considering they'd been sharpened and used.

Thanks for all your feedback

Regards
