What Tools Do I Need?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to make some Belts and other small leather items. I will be doing some simple stitching, punching holes, setting rivets and snaps, and cutting leather. What tools should i buy to get started? Are there any good kits out there? Any info would be appreciated.

You should get in touch with the suppliers on the sponsor pages. The list of tools you need will vary with the opinion of the person telling you. If you are just getting started I would start with a basic set and get the best tool value possible. For sure with stitching you would need a good awl, and thread and needles. Get good ones as the cheap stuff will disappoint you. You will also need a rivet setting tool and a snap setter in addition to the snaps and rivets. As far as stamping tools, you can start with the cheaper Tandy stuff or go all the way to the Barry King tools or Bob Beard or Clay Miller to name a few. They are quality tools and will cost significantly more, but, you get what you pay for!! Also with leather.........there is good stuff like Wickett and Craig or Herman Oak all the way to other nonusable leather form some others, again, you get what you pay for.............just my 1 1/2 cents worth.

This question is asked maybe twice a week. Do a search for what tools and see what you come up with.

Welcome by the way!

Hope to see you back with some work soon, or some detailed questions ...

Someone should put up a sticky of which tools to get for the beginner.

Same question! I have been searching this site and hope to find good answers. Specifically I am looking for a list of Singer machines listed by ability...from Featherweights to HD...I find Singer 66's, 99-51's and 11-20's, but don't know where they lie (lay?) in their abilities and have to google each one. I am interested in doing the heavy grunt work and working with someone who likes to do the detail work...I don't have the patience for intricate tooling (yet). Thanks!
