Modeling Tools

Recommended Posts

I have ordered Barry King's modeling spoons and I have a couple of vintage Tandy's modeling tools but I was wondering if there is a quality set I might purchase? Also, my vintage ones no longer have the protective coating (grip) on the handle and are therefore very thin and uncomfortable to hold. Can that grip be replaced?

thank you,

Raquel

The only other source for modeling spoons I can think of off the top of my head is Robert Beard, but there are probably others (on this site even) that make them. Just can't think of any now.

As for restoring your grips, if the tools are thick enough you could get the rubber pen or pencil grips they sell at office supply stores and slide those over the barrel of the spoon, giving them a softer grip. Also, you could wrap them in electrical tape until you get the thickness you want. Of, if the rubber grips are too big for the spoons, do a combination and wrap them with the tape until they are thick enough to securely grip the rubber pen grip.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Go to a auto parts store and ask to see the vaccum line / tubing. Take your tools with you to make sure that you get a size that will fit.

Raquel,

Many who use them a lot consider the Peter Main tool to be the best. I like the Bob Beard tools, but I have a few of Barry King's that I use a lot. C.S. Osborne makes some excellent modellers that you can get from Springfield Leather for reasonable prices.

I use Peter's modeling tool daily. I have some of the King, Osbourne and Tandy tools and can say with confidence that Peter's is a nicer tool. I'm not quite sure what his formula is but that one double ended tool replaced literally 10 others once I figured out all of it's nuances. Only drawback is he makes them in small batches so there can be a wait to get one at times if he's in between runs.
