Importing A Machine Into Canada

Recommended Posts

I am looking at buying a machine and I was wondering if anyone has recent experience about customs dutys and tariffs when importing.

Would a customs agent be required? Is GST charged? What sort of % do they charge for duty?

Still trying to work out what the budget for this will be.

Thanks in advance

Hi Blake! I just bought a Tippman Boss used from the States. Shipped to Ontario. I paid $950 US for it, which is about $1080 Canadian. Shipping was included, but I paid $130 for duty.

I just paid with Paypal, it shipped through Canada Post, and there was no GST charged.

Hope that helps :)

GST, brokerage, duty. Overall a couple hundred to import something with approximately $2500 value.

If you are purchasing a made in US machine there is no duty, but you will pay GST and brokerage fees. If you are buying new, they are almost all made in asia and subject to duty. It is cheaper in the long run to buy the equivalent machine from a Canadian dealer who will offer good support, because shipping a machine back and forth to the states for service can be a real hassle. I brought in a used Singer from the states and it cost me $ 450 on a $ 950 machine with exchange at about what it is now. Besides, it's good to shop at home. Gump
