Looks great, I like the way you did the brass strap keepers and the use of two buckles (very innovative). Thanks for posting / sharing.

That is quite a collar there...

I have seen collars that wide and (out of curiosity) I just wonder how comfortable that is for the dog?

I just have to ask... Doesn't that restrict air flow when the dog bends his (or her) head down?

or

Is it that wide to protect the dogs neck? Why so wide?

Its only 2 1/2" on the top and 1 1/2" at the front it looks a lot bigger in the pics I hunt with this dog so it will protect her neck as for restrickting air flow its not that tight as long as you can get a couple of fingers under it she will be fine I had a 3" collar on her the other week but she got atacked by a pit x and tore the collar its realy a good job she had it on or she may not have been hear

Hi Gafer,

The collar looks great, like something from the 18th or 19 century.

What sort of leather did you use?

Is it OK to ask where you got the hardware from?

I have 2 large sight hounds here in NZ and would like to do domething similar.

Hoping to avoid casting or machining my own post and ring, keeper etc.

Thanks

Marc.

Hi Gafer

Thanks for the info, I'll give the bridle leather a go. I've only used veg tanned up to now.

I didn't realize the ring and post are called terrets by saddlers..that Abbey site is pretty comprihensive.

Thanks again

M.

Hi gaffer

What quarry would you hunt with this type of dog having the bull mixed in with a running dog. And could there be an issue if she is running a rabbit or something and it shoots in a hole near undergrowth could the collar get caught on any brambles or tree sticks. Nice collar tho

the only thing you can hunt is rats and rabbits with a dog but can be used if say you shoot a fox and its injured then you can use the dog and before the ban in 2004 i used to hunt fox , deer .rabbits and hare and just hunt with lurchers hope this helps and thanks

I make a new style of slip lead like the Waterloo cup coursing style ones. It has a quick release on the wide collar rounded leather leash with a trigger at the top on the hand loop. They work quite well too. I use one on my Laguna whippet bitch. If I get chance I will upload a picture for you.
