Navy Blue Bridle Leather

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I could find some navy blue bridle leather, or any Navy blue veg-tan?

Thanks, Will

also, does anyone know how to get this effect in the photo below. I'm sure its wax, but is there a process for this?post-59832-0-03758000-1435423447_thumb.j

If you're talking about the blue jean look on the leather, I did that technique on a wall. Painted in a navy blue and dry washed, I mean really dry brush, the light on. Looks like they may have done theirs the opposite way. Would just need veg tanned leather, navy water based dye and acrylic white paint. Cheryl

I have no idea how they did it, but it looks a little like what happened when I used fiebings oil dye over aussie leather conditioner. It has wax in it.. (not by choice, please understand. ;) ) post-38542-0-20932300-1435451076_thumb.j

So, the leather on the picture is Bridle leather, A veg tanned leather stuffed with wax and oil and generally very expensive. While many tanneries are doing it, the British and Japanese tanneries are regarded as the best in the world. Most famous is probably J & E Sedgwick in UK. Unless you buy a lot in wholesale, you can in general not buy from the tanneries directly in small quantities, so you have to go through resellers.

There are threads on this forum that covers, leather suppliers. The White stuff on the leather is animal fat/tallow that have been applied by hand and gives this look that is typical for ALL Bridle leather (In UK most makers polish the surface of the leather to get a very high shoe polish like shine, while in Japan it is more popular to leave it). Even when polished away, the leather will bleed or bloom with time and the surface will get white and cloudy again. There are a few Japanese resellers that sometimes sell brightly colored bridle leather in small quantities, but I have never seen anything else than earth colors in UK or US. The picture you are showing is from a Japanese leather maker so he is a bit more fortunate to be able to easier get hold of Japanese brightly colored Bridle leather. Always check with your supplier. Bridle butt are always (as far as I know) sold non polished so it will have that streaky white look. Bridle sides/shoulders sometimes comes pre polished so again, check with your supplier before buying.

On Thoroughbred Leather's Facebook page, they have a "Deep Denim New Haven" Vegtan. It might be dark enough for you. It's also waxed on the grain side.

Thoroughbred Leather - Louisville, Kentucky - Wholesale & Supply Store | Facebook

You'll need to scroll down their timeline a bit to see it. There's a pic on July 9th, and if you scroll down quite a bit, there's some pics of customer products made from it (June 2nd is the first customer pic, and you'll need to scroll further back then that to see more stuff made with it).

Thanks everyone. I ended up going with Sedgewicks Bridle Butts from Abbey England and am amazed by the quality of this leather. I feel that I am not worthy of it haha.
