What To Do With The Wibbly Wobbly Edges Of Hides?

Recommended Posts

I have two somewhat subpar sides that have really wobbly edges. Like...really wobbly. I probably have over five square feet of leather that I don't know how to use once I've pulled what I can from the center . Any ideas? Should I just get them wet, weight them down to try to dry them flat, and try to make use of it? Give up? Soak them and try to make hair bows (Now that's an idea...hair bows are really in right now amongst the preppy set these days...)

I'm open to any suggestions on what to do! Thanks!

Wetting the leather is the way to go. Use a rolling pin to help flatten, then weigh down until dry. The edges are more stretchy than the middle of the side, but if you check out pinterest.com and search under "leather scraps" there are many ideas for using this.

Cheers,

Lois

In the past I have wetted hide down and hung it up with some weight pulling it down sometimes it worked others not as well.

Do you make anything that you wet mold into a shape? This stretchy leather might be very useful for molding. Also, molded items are sometimes 'baked' on very low heat to dry them out and harden them. The belly of a hide can be very stretchy and useful for any application where the leather needs to be formed (like say a mask) but there are areas right around where the leg meets the cow that are so loose they really aren't worth anything.

Leather bottles? There's a tutorial on here somewhere on how to make, harden, and seal those.
