collet/chuck for awls

Recommended Posts

Anyone know where to get the collets or chucks for awls?

I'd like to take a stab(pun intended) at making a few handles for my stitching awls

You can also dispense with the chuck altogether and simply tap the blade into the haft. Place the blade squarely into a vice with a scrap of leather to protect the blade. Then line up the handle squarely in line with the blade and using a hammer, tap the handle onto the blade deep enough so that it is in firm. I have awls that have not had blades changed in over 20 years. When I do have to change a blade, I fill the old hole in the handle with wood putty or a putty made from PVA glue and sawdust. When dry I give it a quick sand and it is good to go again.

I spoke with Bob Douglas today at the Wickenburg show. He said they machine their own collets/chucks.

I saw Barry King today as well and didn't feel comfortable asking.

I've made some with an adapter chuck for a pin vise. Not my most favorite awls.... It would take some decent metal lathe work and such to create an awl chuck/mechanism. Bob's are a good buy.....

Barra's idea works as well. If you get some nice older ones that have LOTS of perforations in them you can clean it up with a hardwood dowel (either bought or made) and drill the end out of the bottom of the handle. Make sure and leave enough around the edges so that the existing wood doesn't split. If you really want to get fancy then you can even add a brass ferrule around the end of the awl.

Regards,

Ben

I would rob them from existing vises.

You could do a search on Ebay for a pin vise and find a wide range of them.
