Painting On Leather.

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me what type of paint to use to paint designs on leather. I am a bit worried about cracking of the paint. I have leather dye, in limited colours, water colour and acrylic paints.

Thank you in anticipation,

Ian.

Hello Ian,

Attempted to post a reply a few minutes ago but for some unknown reason it did not go through.

I use Angelus paints developed for leather. They are acrylic and produce some very nice results. Also use Tarrago dye/paint and it is great as well.

Perhaps they are available in your area as well. Try a search and see.

Hope this is of value.

God Bless.

Ray

I juse the cheep arse acrylic paint from the hobby store and dont do to thick of a layer, rather 2-3 thin ones....then seal it with rubbed on clear laquer, have done many bike seats and paintings are still on...after many miles of riding!!

I usually use a combo of fiebings acrylic dye and regular old acrylic paints from the craft store. Haven't had an issue with either yet. I do suggest with the cheaper ones from the craft store, you might want to go a shade brighter than your intended result if antiquing. Those tend to dull out a little more than the fiebings.

A friend of mine recommend using Faber-Castell PITT Artist Brush Pens because the India Ink is permanent and light fast. I have tried it on a few small projects and am pretty happy with the result (still need to be careful when adding super shene to not smear any excess ink). I have also tried it on finished garment leather (not the super glossy kind) and was surprised at the (good) result.
