Neatsfoot And Staining

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Can you darken leather with neatsfoot than apply a stain on top of it afterwards?

My brain can not get past the visual part of seeing how something would look like

when finished.

Yes. I usually spray on a light coat of neatsfoots or two before applying dye. The neatsfoot slightly darkens the leather giving me an idea of what color of dye to use. In some cases the neatsfoot adds enough color that I don't use any dye. After dying I spray on another light coat of oil before proceeding.

Oil is not a "sealer" so it won't keep further treatments from penetrating. No problem. Some folks actually prefer to oil before dye.

In the harness industry, they use a dye (stain) that they put in the neatsfoot oil. I know Weaver sells it and most probably Beiler's.

thanks guys for the responses.post-13948-050248500 1344599296_thumb.jp

The guy wants the untooled area darkened and the rest black. Just in case it looks bad

I know now I can stain or die it. Top still needs to be tooled. Used the smallest basket weave tool.
