Gluing Rattlesnake Skin To Veg Tan

Recommended Posts

Is it ok to use contact cement to glue a tanned descaled rattlesnake skin to veg tanned leather?

Or should I use a spray adhesive? Will the contact cement show thru the skin or discolor it? A customer wants me to use it for a guitar strap he wants made.

Thanks for and help you can offer.

Tom

I would use 3M90 spray adhesive. Most sprays will fail after a time, 90 is pretty strong. Brush on adhesive may very well soak through.

I've used Tandys contact cement on rattle snake skin several times and never had a problem. Mine were knife sheaths, use a damp rag of alcohal on the side your glueing to take off some of the oil thats on the skin.

How oily is the skin?

If you get the contact cement on uniformly, it doesn't discolor the hide, but you have to be super careful because you can't rub off drips from snake skin like veg tan.

It's not very oily, just enough to cause it not to bond well.

Okay, thanks for your advice. I am going to try both contact cement and the 3m90 on small samples to see what works best.

I don't want to make any visible discolorations when viewing the top side. Thanks again!

I use cc on all of my sheaths and wrist cuffs. I use Weldwood Gel.

I use contact cement to glue exotic skin to veg tan, all the time. Never had a problem. Even the cheap stuff at Lowes or Home Depot will do in a pinch.

I ended up going with the Weldwood CC and it worked great.
