Weird hardware - need to find a supplier urgently

Recommended Posts

I have an order for these items but need to find a supplier for the strange 'post-like' fitting with the press stud / snap on top that holds the paper pads in place. Has anyone seen anything like it before? Does anyone know what it is called? Most important of all - where can I get some?

Thanks for your help guys!

Ohio Travel Bag has something similar but perhaps bigger. Look around their website, as it is listed in the catalog on the bottom of p.23

It does look similar, Ed - but sadly it ain't the same thing at all. I checked out Ohio Travel bag's catalog and website but had no success there.

The thing I need is like a 3/4" post with a male snap fitting on the end...

Thanks anyway fella. That was most kind.

R,

To me the pic is hard to tell what the top part looks like, but im going to take a stab at it.++

It looks like those fasteners used on older WW2 style ammo belts/pouches?

If so, Seattle Fabrics has them, and they use the nomenclature "lift the dot fasteners" but im thinking you should be able to find a euopean supplier?

i tried to attach a pic, but no go.

I really wish it was, Ed - but that thing is a 'lift the dot fastener' (thanks $$hobby) used for clipping down tonneau covers on boats and sports cars. It is fitted onto the fabric of the cover and then clips onto a post that is fastened to the metal or fibre-glass of the boat or vehicle.

The thing I'm looking for has got a post you can drop a pad of paper over and then clip a snap down on top of the post to hold it in place. I guess that (without any paper) there is around 1/2 inch of exposed post when the top clip is on.

could something like this work?

I'm wondering if you look in "unlikely places" if you won't find that snap doing some other "job"

say scrapbooking....

Greetings. What you are looking for appears to be the "lift the dot" snaps made by Scovil (sp). I have seen these "lift the dot" snaps with the long post but I don't have any in stock right now. I had a very bad ordering experience with Skovil a year or so ago but they have outstanding products. Hope this helps.

Hey there UK Ray.

I have looked closley to your problem and reckon I have figured out what you want.

It looks like the upright stud is indeed a lift the dot Screw stud in some form or another. The thing that I also see is that to attatch a dome fastener to the top of this is impossible without a thing which looks like this.93-10708.gif

This means that the dome will attatch to the post. BUT !

your picture is not one of these at all or anything near it. I reckon the snap head only serves to go over the top of the stud (Pointed piece or screw stud) and when the flap is closed and the book closed and dommed shut the loose pages will not come out unless ripped out. The dome head only covers the pointed shaft stud, not actually snapping onto it.

Thats my theory

Have fun and Regards

Trevor

Ray,

Have you tried any ships chandlers or boating suppliers?

I had to get hold of some 'lift-the-dot' type fasteners a couple of years ago and found quite a selection (some of which looked like your picture)on various boating supply sites.

They are also provided by places that cater to classic sports car owners (but their prices are way over the top).

I recall that some are prodided with screw-in posts, on a screw-in plate and others are made for attaching through fabric.

The drawback with some was a special fittong tool was needed.

I did get some from a wee ships chandlers (I only needed a couple) in some land-locked town down south and extemporised the fitting tool. The good thing was they were stainless steel so shouldn't mar the leather like some.

Best of luck.

Gary

UKray,. love the name

Those fasteners look like the sort of thing used on canvas boat tops. I had something similar on the curtains of a horsetrailer once. Like a snap on a post that opens with a tug.

This is a US supplier , but you can probably have them shipped in.

I wonder if this is a clever combination of the two-legged Lift-the-Dot post as at

http://www.bresco.co..._Fasteners.html

and the Prym-type press stud cap on page 7/9 of

http://www.prym-cons...c/0H09003dG.pdf

. . . or maybe something along those lines!
