Squidlips Report post Posted March 7, 2012 Greetings! Will be whipping up a rigid mounted saddle for my chopper, but before I dole out the dollars for leather I need some expert advice: The platform will be 5-6 oz., but wondering what would be best for the gusset? It will be laced to the platform and molded around the foam and riveted to the pan. Would it be best to go lighter on the gusset, say 3-4 oz., since it will be wet molded? How 'bout 4-5 oz.? Would greatly appreciate any input. Regards Squid
Cyberthrasher Report post Posted March 7, 2012 I'm not sure myself, but I'm pretty sure I've seen a lot of folks here using 5/6 across the board.
chancey77 Report post Posted March 7, 2012 (edited) 8/9oz ONLY ON TOPS NEVER USE 4/6 OZ ON TOP FOR A BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sides are ok, but all my seats are made 8/9 regardless of placement! Buy 1 skin and make it last for everything, if it needs thinned out Skiv it where it needs give. THAT IS ME YELLING TRYING TO SAVE YOU .......NOT TRYING TO BE A DK..... Factory bikes including HD use 3/4 oz because they are cheap moifqwrofgyghekjrbvqmrjvER's! And that would be on a good day:) 2oz vinyl is more like it:) 8/9 ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS....... ! 4/5OZ will get wet and flatten out all you tooling....if your just putting on a plain black seat then by all means just use 5/6 Tandy has a sale now on 8/9 double premium shoulders for 80 bucks...take advantage! General rule....tandy kits are good starting pieces, but don't use what they use to mass manufacture kits... Upgrade all leather weights. Belts 8/9 Anything motorcycle 8/9+ Wallets 5/6 insides 3/4 Book cover 5/6 in general that is what should be used. Cyberthrasher Report post Posted March 7, 2012 (edited) .if your just putting on a plain black seat then by all means just use 5/6 Yeah, that's the part I was remembering. I knew it would come back to me. The ones I was thinking were just dyed and laced with no tooling when I think back. I splurged and bought a whole side of 8/9, so I'm covered when I start constructing the real stuff. Chancey - I just created a new list to bookmark all your wisdom for your upcoming book. Now, I just gotta step away from the computer, put down the tools, and start editing Edited March 7, 2012 by Cyberthrasher

Squidlips Report post Posted March 8, 2012 Thank you Gents for the replies. I really appreciate it. 8/9 it is to be on the safe side. Gives me the option of tooling or not. I will take advantage of the Tandy double shoulder option....too good to pass up! Regards, Squid
