Meleck Report post Posted October 8, 2009 My sister-in-law is looking for a leathercrafting "bible" to offer as a christmas gift for my brother. A book that covers the basic techniques without necessarily covering projects. Right now, my brother isn't much into leather carving. I recommended the Leathercraft Tools Book from Al Stolhman as I think it covers a lot of techniques for quite a lot of tools. I was wondering about the Leatherwork Manual because I have never looked at this manual so I can't comment on it. Are there any other suggestions on a very good basic leathercrafting manual? 8thsinner Report post Posted November 8, 2009 If your looking for a leather braiding book which will provide years of pleasure, a little history, a few stories and clear and easy to understand instructions then Bruce grants encyclopedia of rawhide and leather braiding is worth it and more. If your looking for carving and more that side, then al's work is probably still the best starter. I don't have many other books on it, although I have picked up several from old old second hand sourcesthey have interesting things but never as detailed. I am looking to pick up ron edwards work soon though, I'm looking forward to that, but again it's braiding work mainly. Frank Report post Posted November 9, 2009 The leather working manual by Stohlman does provide a lot of good tips for beginners. I highly recommend it. Hilly Report post Posted November 12, 2009 May I suggest "The Art of Making Leather Cases" series by Al Stohlman. These are by FAR the most informative books I have ever bought. They don't go into carving or tooling, but the basics of making nearly any type of case you can imagine. I also highly recommend "The Art of Hand Sewing Leather" by Al Stohlman. Unless you have an expensive leather stitching machine, this book is worth it's weight in gold. Learning the basics first is a good idea. The rest will follow in time.
