Viajero Wallet

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone:

I recently finished up the below wallet, which I've nicknamed the "Viajero" since I took a simiar model on a South American trip last year. I've always found wallet patterns to be a little challenging, since I want them to fold just right and have a slim profile even when loaded up. Several paper and leather mock-ups later, here's the result.

The wallet back is 4-5 oz. cowhide, and the interior is 2 oz. textured pigskin. I also used white nylon thread, Eco-Flo dye, and Leather Weld glue. There are two bill pockets and six credit card pockets.

I also dropped in a pic of a recent key fob. This one was done with Eco-Flo cranberry dye, with the edges slightly darker in java brown dye.

Hey Alex,

These are fantastic. I love the wallet: nice and clean. The keyfob style and the color is great. I need to pick up some of that cranberry dye.

Question on the wallet, is there a reason for not stitching it through the middle bend point? Just curious, I've never made a wallet before and wonder if it's something technical.

Cheers,

Andy

Andy, I'm a fan of your work, and appreciate the nice comments. wave.gif

Good question about why I stopped stitching at the ends of the pockets. Even though it might look better to carry the stitching all the way around the interior, I guess I have a minimalist (read: slacker laugh.gif ) approach to leatherwork. If I'm not joining two pieces of leather together, I don't stitch.

Thanks! It's hand-stitched. I actually enjoy the stitching process, but it definitely limits the size of what I'm willing to make. I wouldn't want to hand-stitch a belt or a satchel...

I know what you mean. I made a tool bag for my son, who's an electrition, my hands were sore...

I've also stitched a belt, Would LOVE to get a Good sewing machine, can't afford one right now !

Alex, i've always been a fan and you have yet to let me down. They both look very clean and "tight", well done !! What finish did you use on the wallet ? What's for lunch today ?

Freak, the feeling is mutual, my man. Now it's your turn to post something! After the wasteland welding helmet and the bulldog binder, I can't wait to see what turns up next.

And before I forget, I thought the pink coffee wrap you did with the white antique was off the hook. It definitely had a strong American folk art vibe to it, which I loved.

Now, to your questions: (1) Satin Shene, and (2) Leftovers. cool.gif
